Could this be OUR time?

Proving all our cards come up on players staying an injuries (which they won't, no team ever has a blot-less season, not least ******* Everton) we still aren't good enough to win the league. We lack a 30 goal a season striker, a squad big enough to accommodate the eventual spell of fatigue that hits each season or the experience to last when the heat turns up at the critical moment in title races.

We're certainly good enough to finish in the top 4 if we have a better rub of the green on all fronts, less injuries than last year and cut out silly dropped points against inferior opposition. Any team in the league has the potential to win a trophy, what you need to set you apart is better luck that year than everyone else, we need a massive swing in fortune to win a cup, almost did it 2 years ago but for Chelscum to accept it as a consolation prize... this year maybe us, here's to hoping.

This is a myth. Our squad is plenty big enough to cope.

Only one or two players need resting at once. With players such as Osman, Rodwell and Bilyaletdinov not guranteed starters, i'd say we have plenty of depth

It is frightening how good Rodwell is and he isn't a guarenteed starter, nor is he in what most people consider our strongest squad

Howard
Coleman-Jagielka-Distin-Baines
Fellaini-Arteta
Anichebe-Cahill-Pienaar
Saha

Subs.
Mucha
Heitinga
Hibbert
Rodwell
Bilyaletdinov
Osman
Yakubu
Youngster like Gueye

We have a lot of strength in depth. FFS, I dont think Heitinga's a guranteed starter (In Moyes' eyes anyway), seeing as he seems to prefer Distin.

 I get the feeling we're in for a good season

I agree, but you'd have Heits over Distin there. Beckford doesn't even make your bench there. The best thing is, the media and the rest of the country don't seem to mention us or our squad, let's hope we have a special season

While I do really like the squad we're having now, I can't see us as PL winners. We have a good mix of youth and experience and we've managed to let our youngsters get experience as well. But we have a fairly fragile squad anyway. Take away Arteta and Pienaar and we don't have any creative midfielder left. We do rely quite a bit on Jagielka in the defence and Saha/Yak in the offence as well.

Our first 18 is good enough to give us a CL spot, and not just 4:th. But we are going to get injuries during the season, it's inevitable. It's how we handle those injuries that will determine our season. But unless we get long term injuries or loose important players in the transferwindows we should get back into Europe next season, otherwise I'd be disappointed.

What the team need to learn better is to really dominate the matches against the teams that will be fighting in the lower regions of the table and avoid needless draws or even losses in those games.

This is exactly it in a nutshell.

Couldn't be put any better.

Ill be happy to be competititive for a C.L. spot if that could successfully be consistently acheived over a period of a couple of years it would be real progress on and of the feild.

Ive been optimistic for the past two seasons, im a little more cautious about this one for one major reason and thats injuries. Fully fit this squad i think would have gotten CL last year. When you analyise the last two seasons, we have had an injury crisis somewhere. The year we got to the cup final we had no strikers and last year at times in midfeild and defence. I think a lot of our season will be dictated by injuries to key players, especialy the likes of Jags, Pienaar and Arteta - the squad cant cope with those losses and often those three are the difference between a draw and a win.

Two things were evident for me from last year, that we rally need to improve on. One is that we havnt yet learned how to break down teams who play with two deep banks of four - the likes of which Stoke, Brum, Wolves etc play. This is what i mean about Arteta and Pienaar being so vital, if anything happens to those two you can expect to draw those games as we did last season. One thing that impressed me about us last season was that if you came out and played against us we could beat absoulutley anyone. But the squad strength in terms of creativey in the Arteta and Pienaar mould concerns me - with question marks over their futures and injuries - they are very often the difference between 1 point and 3.

Secondly the defence needs to majorily pull up its socks, we conceaded far to many goals last season - something that has been a strength in the past. I know we had really bad injuries, looseing Lescott and new palyers coming in. But the defensive record was really poor and conceading goals against some very ordinary teams like, Brum, Stoke, Wolves and Bolton saw us loose some very vital points - if the CL is to be a reality you need to keep in an aorund 20 clean sheets. The whole team has a responsability to be more solid, but the defence really needs to improve.

Yet i dont think the CL is impossible our squad inury free can beat any of our rivals - but i think it will be a slog and will be determind by injuries to key players, an improvement in defence and a significant improvement in breaking down teams who play spoiling tactics aginst us.

I remember thinking the same thing before the 84-85 season. And for most of that season too. Until about March, then I began to believe.

I'm not saying that we'll win it, but there's a reason why this club is magical. Every now and then we do the unexpected.

In those days we'd have been quoted at about 20/1 for the league at the beginning of the season. This year it's 150/1.

Times change, money talks.

Be aware, I was on Bluemoon last night looking for something to read (I couldn't sleep, lol) and one of them quoted something from this thread I think in one of theirs bashing Everton supporters about some kerfuffle on a Facebook page.

They're amongst us.

A trophy will do me.
We all know someone is gettin flogged before the start of the season which will mess things up a little.
Top 4 is possible. Smashin citeh and the rs even more so

Sad, really. There's nothing to be gained from acting like a tw@t on an MCFC Facebook page. I hope they realise we're not all knobheads.

They don't.

Well, one or two do. But the majority of them absolutely despise us. I'm not too bothered really, I'm not especially struck on them either.
Let them do what they do because they're going to anyway, their mental problems are well documented. Just when they talk about being beyond our level and whatnot it makes the double we did over them last season all the more satisfactory.

Softly softly boys. I have been thinking we have had our best ever squad for 5 consecutive seasons now, getting a bit better each time!
I do not want media attention on our team, I just want us to reach full potential and win a trophy.
Not much to ask!

Bookies more astute than the media....!
