Lukaku

You've got to admit that your original statement was a bit silly, though. But, I must be honest in that Lukaku's performances have worryingly dropped. I agree, he isn't that player that I thought he was. His first touch is poor and he isn't very good with his back to goal.

He will be a top striker in a couple of years from now, but I don't know if we could justify spending £20m+ on him (let alone afford him) with the lack of money we have.

Not really mate, as I clearly said "since November" in that original statement!!!

If I'd have said "Lukaku is the worst striker we've had in the last decade" then that'd be ridiculous yes, but I didn't.

That is a secondary factor though mate. Scoring is something that leads on from linking up the play and the entire side being a more influential attacking unit; the problem isn't in Lukaku's goalscoring, it's in his approach play and overall enthusiasm.

Can we afford a striker who better fits our system? In my view, yes. Can we afford a player of the ability Lukaku can reach? Well, that's an entirely different question - the answer is no, as Lukaku is a £50m striker in the making. But he isn't it yet; nowhere near.

I've said all of this prior to tonight. It's a considered judgement.

This is the thing that I disagree with you though, I see enthusiasm, but the whole team has looked jaded not just himself.

Maybe you need to be questioning Martinez then if Lukaku doesn't fit our system, not Lukaku hmself. I don't see how it's his fault at all.

If he was a few years older than we would probably see a different type of character in Rom.

Why has no rich farang bought this fine club yet...Hull City probably have more money than us now ffs. We are forever scraping barrels, doing loan deals etc. A top 4 finish is going to be nigh on impossible sadly.

Everton have chang (Thai for elephant btw.. :) for sponsor but all over Thailand there is sod all exposure, was down in the middle of no where in a beautiful idillic island in krabi last year. And there I was getting a singha beer thinking of how peaceful and beautiful life was and who is on the can but John f<>king Terry and chelsea...seriously.

hmmm maybe going off topic here..

I think Lukaku isn't prepared to put the shift in to fit the system. He seems to run off the shoulder, not be given the ball as we play a possession system, then sulk when the play breaks down, failing to realise that if he'd made the correct movement and made himself available for the ball to feet then he'd eventually be able to work the ball wide then attack from deeper to the six yard box as the overlapping full back gives the cross.

Lukaku looks like a target man who links play given his strength, but he plays as a poacher. Martinez needs the complete striker to have things work, and the annoying thing is that when Lukaku was confident pre-December, he was doing all of this effortlessly and not complaining about it.

And that's why this is his fault. He's already proven he can do it. In fact, pre-December, he was so bloody good that he gassed himself out after 70 minutes as he was so involved in play!

Beattie, Jo, Anichebe, Saha, Jelavic, Vellios and Stracqualursi are all players who have had at least as bad a run of games as Lukaku. So there's 7.

As bad maybe, but not worse. I'd say all of those have been utterly ineffective during their careers at Everton over a period of months, and Lukaku certainly joins that list.

Some of what you said I agree with, he isn't a target man in my opinion.

I'm more inclined to say that team performances haven't been as good, but I'm slightly clutching at straws there.

I do think he lost that momentum from earlier on the season, maybe I just see something that you don't, but it doesn't matter anymore.

If he's done his ligaments, he's done for the season pretty much.

The more I see Lukaku the less I rate him. He cannot hold the ball up and doesn't have the guile to bring his team mates into play. For what he would cost I think we could do better.

Who?

Bare in mind we're talking long term value here. I can't think of ANY other player valued around £20m with the potential he has and the resale/profit capability.

And I'm criticising him tonight!

My mind feels like mush after that derby, how you's have the mind power to discuss all things Lukaku, well I respect yas.

Need something to talk about other than that - was in tears earlier, not going to lie. Nearly 30 years old but that hurt as bad as it would a teenager.

When Lukaku came on against West Ham I thought...FINALLY, a striker to take us through the glass ceiling. And for the next few matches he did nothing to disabuse me of that notion, scoring a goal/game. Then....what happened? He turned TERRIBLE. His first touch is worse than my dead grans. I think the Mourinho spat got in his head. He loves Chelsea and started to get a jumbled headspace.

Having said all that, best wishes Romelu for your recovery and all. Thank you for your early efforts
