Martínez is shown the scale of the task to change Everton's style

The passing game is great, if played right with players
looking to make a forward pass at the right time and also at a high tempo.

Anything below that and it will bore the socks off people.

Agree with this. Much of the passing between Jagielka and Distin reminded me of an England friendly match where the centre halves make a token attempt to show how England pass the ball around.
Its posession in the opponents half that counts and it needs to be a lot sharper and purposeful than we have seen so far.

I know a lot of people are happy for us to finish 10th-12th this season if our football is promising and we have potential for the future.
I actually think that Martinez' best chance of a top 6 finish is THIS season. Wigan never really improved the longer he was there, infact they probably got worse. Yes he was at a financial disadvantage and was forced to sell his best players in the summer, but its exactly the same at Goodison.

As has been said before it will take the players probably most of this season to settle into the managers style of play.

The manager has a range of better players at this club than he had at Wigan so it is not correct to assume he will try to replicate everything at Everton that he did at Wigan. No more than it is correct to assume that David Moyes will try to turn Utd into Everton...although I may be proven wrong in that.

In the long term I think the style of football David Moyes had the team playing had taken us up the league as far as we could go.We needed to try to play the brand of football that is currently winning trophies.Barcelona ,Real Madrid and Bayern have created the template and it is now up to others copy or improve on that.

In the CL we have seen that the style of football played in the premiership has been surpassed in Europe.Utd looked second best last season,God knows how they will play this season. Martinez seems to want Everton to play the total football favoured by the teams that are currently winning the CL. We are limited by resources and time will tell how far he can bring the team or if he has the ability to do so.

It is encouraging to see Barkley and Stones promoted to the first team squad and the next week may possibly give us a clearer picture of his vision for the future when we see who goes out and who comes in.

People won't care about the style of football soon enough, it's all about getting results.

That's why the likes of Swansea abandon their expansive passing game when they go to difficult grounds. Even Chelsea shut up shop and played without a recognised striker last night. Martinez has to show he can adapt his tactics to the situation, that's more important to me than watching us pass the ball from side to side without actually going anywhere with it.

Exactly right mate.

Go on then, indulge me, at what point did Moyes lose your support?

I doubt Roberto will be standing around with the squad looking at a print out of this thread going "lads, there is a magnificent thread, we are getting lots of support from davek but unfortunately *sniffs* Timak isn't sold on my track record or signings"

Football-wise, when he failed to evolve beyond playing basic meat and potato football and turned inward to favour a core of old hands who he stuck with to the detriment of bringing young talent through.

Off the field, when he turned into one half of a stultifying double act that throttled all hope that this club could do anything other than cook the books and tread water...and the final straw in that respect was his outrageous stab in the back on a group of supporters trying to pose legitimate questions about the way the club was run.

Exactly. But as a lot of Moyes-outers pointed out repeatedly Moyes was one of the best paid managers in the world and therefore we should have been able to attract anyone we wanted. From that pool of talent I refuse to believe Martinez was the best possible choice given his woeful league record.

Yet all you can come up with is a punt on a German team's manager who's team dropped from 5th to 13th in the past two seasons...in an 18 team league. I'm not really seeing the overwhelming advantages here.

It's good to see you still giving Martinez your continued 'support' though, even though you dont want to see him here.

Tbh I think the German style of play was always one Moyes admired and aspired to. Bayern's game is often quick, dynamic and at times can be direct, a lot different from the tactics employed by the Spanish sides.

The problem simply is that you can't get the likes of Naismith to get anywhere near those kind of levels.

I'm hoping that what we're seeing now are simply teething problems.

The players are probably still a bit nervous about adopting a style which, when it breaks down, will leave them exposed to quick counter attacks, and so in that respect I can understand the slowness of their passing. It's something they need to get past sooner rather than later though.

It's going to be a helter skelter ride all season. Not for the faint hearts and wibble wobblers. Maybe they should stand aside for a bit.

They'd have kicked Kendall out. Very clever people we're dealing with here. At least the one's who daubed 'Kendall Out' on the Dome's garage door gave it a couple of years to form an opinion like!

Just because you're a new manager doesn't mean you can't be held up to scrutiny. Martinez should get time to implement his ideas, no reason why we can't analyse it in the process.
