Alan Smith

Yeh the loan deal sounds ok but i still cant think of any player with his 'potential' for that money.

Oh well if Moyes thinks its a good idea, ill go with that! :D

A youngster with potential maybe? Someone who is actually going to contribute. We don't have alot of money, wasting a valuable 2 million on Alan Smith would be riduclous, that money could go towards players like Moutinho, Mbia, Fernandes, Topal, Bent etc.

I don't see how he could fill in for Cahill when he actually doesn't score goals. He's not a link man either, he just runs around like a headless chicken, gives alot of freekicks away and doesn't score.

He's a liability, he's not good enough for Newcastle he's not good enough for us. I accept that Newcastle isn't always the best place to judge but they've seen some poor players in there time and they really do put Alan Smith at the bottom of the pile, one of the worst players to play for them.

He's a woeful player, a midfielder who can't tackle and a striker who can't score. I really don't see the point in wasting money on him, I'd take a loan but even then I'd be reluctant. He offers nothing.

i would copy your post word for word except that i would be inclined to add the word 'battery' before the word 'chicken'.

you are a learned gentleman.

reading through we have 2 distint camps.

1) people who think 1.75 million is good business in the days of the inflated transfer market.

2) people who think, even on a free, the only positive contribution he would make would be if he laid down the cones in training.

going to be an interesting transfer to watch the developments!

I'm leaning towards option 2 on this one. Can't see anything really worthwhile coming out from this one. Sure 1.75M isn't that much, but then there is his wages. And I for one have a hard time seeing him on a fairly low weekly salary.

I used to to think he was a good player but lets face it, hes done f all for a few seasons now, probably due to breaking his leg. If he's worth £1.75m then i think its worth it cause at the mo if we get a few injuries it will be bill kenwright in midfield at this rate!

Dear oh dear, what sort of message does this send out to the fans - if the rumour is true of course. This isn't a 'Moyes pulls out a fantastic Premiership player out of the Championship' ala Cahill/Lescott. This is more of a Tommy Grav sort of situation. Player almost past his sell by date. Not very fresh but still useable - might benefit from 30 seconds in the microwave (otherwise known as Moyes' work ethic) maybe?

Lucho, Manny, Moutinhio,.....Smith.
I agree we need some warm bodies but we seem to be clutching at straws a bit.

Oh for the days before the internet, Sky and constant speculation. Days before the transfer window, when players came and went at any time so the pain or joy was instantaneous - Headlines in the papers for a day or two and that was it. Transfer done!

This is like death by a thousand cuts...day after day of rumour and speculation.
Someone make it stop! Please.

What's the big deal? Why are people comparing Smith to your Moutinho's etc? He'd be a squad player, on the bench, bolster numbers. He's a decent player which means when he does play as cover he's do a job rather than relying on youngsters or playing people out of position.

1.5 mill is nothing and he would add to numbers we drastically need.

Normally I wouldnt be for this move, but at £1.7M and the squad as small as it is, then you cant turn away a player who's played at the highest level. We're going to need as many new faces as we can get and that price is peanuts at the moment. My only worry would be his salary.

1.5 mill is nothing to pay for a player now ... as we dont have carsley , aj ,cahill no fit , hibbo injured victor at the olympics and vaughn may be suspended i think smith would be a decent buy for that price

I wasnt really comparing him to the players I mentioned - my point is rather that we APPEAR to be lowering the benchmark for incoming players rather than raising it. If someone like Smith comes in after we've made a signing like Moutinhio (fingers crossed) then I for one would feel a little more comfortable.
Having said that, if Smith is who Davey wants, then he must see something that appeals to him so bring him on!

If it comes down to a choice between Smith and Neville to play in our midfield, then I would be happy to see Smith play.

Remember how gutted Leeds fans were when he signed for Man Ure. There must be some talent for Moyes to bring out.
