Alan Smith

are you sure moyes would bring him in as a striker?

what about the vacant carsley position?

Hopefully not. He played decent as a striker in his career but his foray into the midfield has been crap. I'm also guessing that we'd only bid for him if we sell Johnson. Im thinking postitively; hopefully Mutinhino will fill in at CM or perhaps Jags. Hey Arteta was a holding mid when he was at Barca. Who needs him in attack anyway?

Any striker who can bag more than 4 goals a season is now worth 5M+ so getting him as a squad player for 1.75M wouldn't be that bad of an idea. Everybody instantly gets worse when they put on a Newcastle shirt and don't do badly once they split. So maybe he's still decent. He's played out of position for like 3 years now as well.

He can't get 4 goals a season, he played his fair shair of games upfront for Newcastle last season when Owen and Martins where out.

Loved him when he was at Leeds. for £1.75m I'd take him. He's like Beattie but he can actually run. Stick him in a decent team and give him some confidence and he could be good for 10-15 goals a season.

I think Moyes might be buying him as cover for a perma-crocked Cahill. Just doing the link up play in the hole.

I think if we hadn't had such a transfer window of high promise and ultimate discontent people would be warmer to this deal. He's not a bad player, he just hadn't had much of a settled time at ManU(he's never a holding mid Fergie lad) and Newcastle are proper crap who can't supply decent football, let alone supply their forwards.

Thumbs up from me.

You can't judge anyone by what they've done at NUFC. Bomsong was the worst player I ever seen but once he got off the squad he was suddenly decent again. As long as his wages aren't excessive (god knows how much those idiots pay him) it would be a negliable risk and might even pay off for us in a year or 2.

he's not even worth the combined price of a leeds utd, manure and newcastle shirt. and we should be using him to wipe the arse of an everton shirt whilst wearing all aforementioned shirts.

please say it ain't so, please!!!

He never scored 10-15 goals when he was playing in a good Man U side!!! Give the lad a wide berth!!!

For that price you cant argue!

Extra cover for Cahill or striker. Every1 needs to ignore what he is like for the barcodes cos they fck players careers up big time :P

I cant think of another player that would be good cover for that price.(y)

Whether he's worth buying or not also depends on his salary requirements of course. Any ideas what kind of salary he might request in comparison to the rest of our squad? Would he become an average-salary guy or would he become one of our best paid players (really dont hope so)...

I agree totally. If Moyes wants him it must be because he believes that despite his NUFC career he can still bring something to the team. As I have said on numerous occasions you just don't suddenly become a bad player!

Let him go to a team that really is a team, where people work their socks of for the team and he might be able to gel and bring back that predator instinct he had at Leeds.

If it doesn't work out then at £1.75 m. you can always ship him to a championship side.

Good point but i can see him being on an average wage.

A youngster with potential maybe? Someone who is actually going to contribute. We don't have alot of money, wasting a valuable 2 million on Alan Smith would be riduclous, that money could go towards players like Moutinho, Mbia, Fernandes, Topal, Bent etc.

I don't see how he could fill in for Cahill when he actually doesn't score goals. He's not a link man either, he just runs around like a headless chicken, gives alot of freekicks away and doesn't score.

He's a liability, he's not good enough for Newcastle he's not good enough for us. I accept that Newcastle isn't always the best place to judge but they've seen some poor players in there time and they really do put Alan Smith at the bottom of the pile, one of the worst players to play for them.

He's a woeful player, a midfielder who can't tackle and a striker who can't score. I really don't see the point in wasting money on him, I'd take a loan but even then I'd be reluctant. He offers nothing.
