Alan Smith

Moyes gets the best out of players that have talent, Alan Smith sadly doesn't have talent. Even at Leeds his goalscoring record was woeful, he only scored 38 goals in 172 appearances and he never played in midfield there.

What would he actually offer us, surely you even buy squad players for a reason. We could go out and buy a young winger with potential for 2 million. Someone hungry with pace to burn, whether that's from somewhere like the Championship, Holland or Portugal there's certainly players out there.

Buying Smith would be a bad step back. Your either buying a midfielder who is seriously a liability and hacks people down or your buying a striker who doesn't score. He's been playing for Newcastle upfront all pre-season, he's yet to score a goal and he had his fair share of goes there last season under Allardyce and Keegan.

I'd rather have Neville in midfield to be honest and if Smith is AJ's replacement I'll be gutted. Atleast AJ scored a reasonable amount of goals. I'd be gutted if Moyes signed him, I really would.

I'd rather keep AJ than get Smith, he's one of the worst players going at the moment. Newcastle fans hate him, he's one of there worst players.

Your either getting a midfielder who can't tackle or a striker who can't score. Would be a [Poor language removed] awful signing even for under 4 million.

Bingo bango.

I really can`t see what all the fuss is about? Moyes has said we needs 5 or 6 players in, every one on this board agrees with that, we have had endless threads about who we want. 2 or 3 quality players who will improve the starting 11 and 2 or 3 squad players, and if the squad players are versatile then that would be a bonus.
I doubt very much that we will sign Alan Smith, but IF he came for less than £2m on a pay as you play type deal i think it would be a good bit of business, for all the Smith haters, who else in our squad would be capable of clattering Stevie GGGG, in the first 5 minutes of the next derby? We have NO aggression in our squad...full stop..If he comes i will give him my 100% support...think cheap squad player, not our number one target!!

Hes a good player, was at leeds and united. Come on, look at newcastle, they hardly ever played him in attack, on the wing or att. Mid. Besides it is Newcastle, most players go there to end their career prospects.

£1.5 million sign him up. Besides, Moyes knows what he is doing.

When we're talking about managierial skills then moyes is second to none, but when it comes to dealing and negotiating in the transfer market can you be 100% confident in your statement 'moyes knows what he is doing'??

"Up front is Keegan’s biggest problem. Smith has yet to score after 37 appearances for Newcastle since moving from Manchester United last year. He has not registered a Premier League goal since November 2005 and is also the subject of a transfer bid from Everton. "

I seriously hope this isn't true, if it is we really are desperate. Moyes has been a fan in the past.
nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnooooooooooooooooooo

Yes, even more so. Would any other manager get £12 million for johnson, £5 million for Beattie, signing the likes of Jagielka, Cahill, Arteta, Lescott for little money. Same with Yakubu, not exactly the highest rated striker, but he came to Everton and improved his fitness, now look at him.

I'm glad you've cherry picked the cream of the crop, hope your not forgetting Per Koldrup, Tobias Linderoth, Li Tie, Alex Nyarko, Kevin Kilbane, Anderson de Silva! I hope your confidence will come into fruition.

i reckon he could do a job as a squad member if we can get him happy, settled and fit. his versatility might appeal to DM, but he was always a decent striker than midfielder. again thumbs up from me at that price.

Pretty sure both Linderoth and Nyarko were Smith signings, but I'm splitting hairs.

Overall Moyes gets more right than wrong.

Linderoth and Nyarko were brought in by Smith.
Li Tie was part of the Keijein sponsorship and wasn't bad until he broke his leg.
Kroldrup is actually a good player - in Serie A - just couldn't hack it in the Premiership, many have tried and fallen the same way : Veron, Crespo etc.
Kilbane was a good squad player, always gave 110% and we doubled our money on him.
da Silva was a genuine cock-up, but it was 3 years after we first wanted him that he finally got to play for us : just never lived up to early promise but for 700k, not a major issue.

Linderoth & Nyarko were Wally signings.

We didn't lose a penny on Kroldrup. The club gambled on Champions League qualification with his signing & would've owed Fiorentina a further £1m added to an initial £3.5m had he played 10 league games. We flogged him to Fiorentina at Christmas for £3.5m.

Li Tie was a mainstay in a side that finished 7th, our highest league finish since 1996 & had an eye for a pass. Received a bad injury in his second season & was never the same player but all-in-all a good return on what was a free transfer on behalf of our sponsors.

Kilbane, despite obvious limitations, was easily a great return on £1.5m.

Da Silva had a huge reputation a few seasons ago & was being sniffed around by Man Utd & Arsenal so a gamble of £1m was hardly without vindication. We recouped every penny off Barnsley, nonetheless.
