The 18-year-old is on loan at Preston North End until the end of the season. However, Everton’s limited midfield options have seen the teenager linked with a recall.
Armstrong scored his first goal since his move to Deepdale at the weekend, a late equaliser in a 1-1 draw with Wrexham.
The youngster has had a superb first half of the season. Indeed, PNE manager Paul Heckingbottom has made it clear he’d like to see him remain in Lancashire.
The academy player has also stated his openness to remaining out on loan for the rest of the campaign.
He said: “Well, I think it’s out of my hands. Whatever decision is made, I just hope it’s the best for my development.
“I’d love to stay here and contribute to a season.
“Hopefully we can get in and amongst the play-offs, but like I said, I’m just leaving it to the hands of the people who control it and getting on with my football.”
It’s a very mature interview for such a young player. He’s performing well at Preston and gaining invaluable experience in a competitive division.
If that is what’s best for his long-term development, our short term gains should be sidelined so he can continue to progress.
Moyes has had availability issues in midfield. Idrissa Gueye’s dismissal at Old Trafford saw him suspended for three games.
The Senegalese international will be available for Chelsea, but will then depart for AFCON, due to end on January 18th.
Summer signing Merlin Rohl has been sidelined following a hernia operation, while Tim Iroegbunam was suspended for the Forest game.
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall has dropped into a deeper role, which has brought out the best in him. Charley Alcaraz has also performed well in the number 10.
James Garner has been superb. However, the versatile 24-year-old has featured at full-back at times this season.
Ultimately, the club have a decision to make in the coming weeks. When everyone is available, Moyes has an abundance of options in midfield.
However, circumstances have seen those options dwindle, and the midfield picks itself at the minute. Another injury or suspension could derail the club’s season.
If Armstrong is ready for Premier League football, it would be great to see him in a blue shirt. However, we’ve got to do what’s best for his development, even if that requires patience.
It’ll be interesting to see what decision the club make in the New Year.
