David Moyes has provided an update on potential incomings as well as team news for the weekend’s fixture.
During his press conference ahead of Sunday’s game, Moyes insisted Everton are ‘trying to make progress’ in the transfer market. However, he was reluctant to be pushed on specific deals.
Moyes stated, “I’d like to say yes [there has been progress] but that yes might mean that you’re going to push me for more answers than what it might be – but I have to say I think we’re trying to make way to get more players in. We’re trying to do so.
“We’ve been disappointed that we’ve missed out on other players which have chosen not to come or, for different reasons, have not been able to make it – but I think there are quite a few managers saying the same thing in the Premier League.
“But, yes, I think we’re trying to make progress at the moment. Will it come off? I couldn’t guarantee that – but we’re definitely trying to move on.”
The Blues are in desperate need of a new right-back, with a right winger also needed and a new centre-forward. Beto looked isolated in Monday night’s 1-0 defeat at Leeds, but his inability to hold the ball up continues to be an issue. Summer signing Thierno Barry scored 11 La Liga goals for Villarreal last season, including a hat-trick against Leganes. However, he may take time to adjust to life in the Premier League.
“ON THE WAY, BUT NOT FIT”
Moyes also confirmed that Branthwaite, Mykolenko and Patterson remain unavailable for Sunday’s game against Brighton. New signing Adam Aznou faces a late fitness test.
The Everton boss stated: “Jarrad is on the way but not fit, neither is Mykolenko – and Nathan Patterson is not fit, either. Aznou has trained today for the first time, so we’ll see how he goes.”
Should Aznou remain sidelined, James Garner could be forced to fill in at left-back for the second consecutive game. This further highlights the need for investment in key areas. While seven new faces have joined the ranks so far this summer, two of them are back-up goalkeepers.
With PSR issues hampering our recruitment in recent years, the club seem to be in a position to spend once more. However, Moyes’ remarks indicate that the club has struggled to land desired targets.
Meanwhile, Everton have two massive home games within the space of three days. Indeed, Sunday’’s game against Brighton is followed by an EFL Cup tie against Mansfield Town next Wednesday. With little over a week to go until the summer window slams shut, hopefully it will be a busy period for the club.
