Gordon Could Be England’s Joker In The Pack

England’s form has hardly dazzled ahead of the World Cup in Qatar and manager Gareth Southgate will be considering players who can turn their fortunes around.

Everton’s Anthony Gordon could be just that player needed to spark inspiration for a Three Lions side that have struggled ahead of the major tournament this winter.

Fearless Gordon Could Shine In Qatar

A player who emerged as a real star at Goodison Park, Gordon is yet to have earned a cap with England’s senior side ahead of the World Cup. According to TPP – Statistical Probabilities, the Three Lions are outsiders to lift the trophy in the Middle East this winter but bringing a player like Gordon to the competition could be a smart move by Southgate. Granted, the 21-year-old is untested at senior international level, but in a group England are expected to progress from, Gordon could be given minutes on the field. The Three Lions should be finishing top of a group that includes Iran, the USA and Wales, so Southgate could arguably afford giving an inexperienced player like Gordon a chance.

Everton’s academy product has shown in the Premier League since his debut in January 2020 that he has an x-factor they are determined to keep. With a seemingly fearless approach to the game, the winger played a key role in helping Everton climb away from the danger zone at the end of last season. Gordon has the pace and technical ability to cause defences problems and he would be a great option for Southgate on that left flank. With six games without a win leading into the World Cup, Southgate should be considering other options to get England back on track. Gordon could be the wildcard pick needed to do that in Qatar.

Gordon Gets The Nod From Allardyce

Former England and Everton boss Sam Allardyce is certainly an admirer of Gordon and feels the 21-year-old should be given a chance at the World Cup. Allardyce has admitted he has not worked directly with the winger but has seen his progress over the last couple of years. Now back playing in his more familiar role on the left wing, after covering at centre-forward for Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Gordon’s form has been positive ahead of the World Cup.

England’s group does offer up the opportunity to test out players and combinations before the all-important knockout stages of the competition. England face Iran in their opening game, before they take on the US and finally Wales. With the way Gordon has taken on the step up in class to Premier League football, he looks to be a creative player who could handle the biggest stage of them all.

Everton has a long history of producing England players and Gordon has the potential to be the next one on the list. Many believe his chance with the Three Lions should come sooner rather than later.
