Klaassen’s future up in the air

Davy Klaassen’s long term Everton future has been cast into severe in doubt and even Marcel Brands is unsure on the matter.

Big things were expected of Klaassen when he arrived at the Blues from Ajax last summer for a fee around £24 million, but his time at Goodison has been nothing short of a nightmare.

The Dutchman made just 16 appearances in all competitions in his debut campaign at Everton, and was banished from first team duties for the majority of the season.

He was withdrawn early in the second half against Bournemouth and didn’t have a sniff of Premier League action until the campaign spiralled to an unsatisfying end, where he came off the bench three times in the Toffees’ final nine fixtures.

Klaassen’s determination cannot go unnoticed, with the former Ajax captain explaining how he doesn’t regret coming to the L4 outfit, he said: “Coming to Everton was the right choice for me.

“A club full of passion, suitable for my game style. I feel like I’m at home,” he continued: “I can’t wait to start the new season in Everton.”

Everton’s new Director of Football is familiar with Klaassen as he had many chances to look at the 25-year-old whilst the pair were in the Netherlands.

Brands was asked about Klaassen’s Everton future and he said: “I can only tell you something about him from when he played in Holland. He was a very good player, he was the captain of Ajax, a very clever player, a good goal scorer, but last season there were a lot of players in his position, so it was very difficult for him. In the end he didn’t play so much.

“What we will do this week is to take decisions on what player fits in our plans for the next situation.”

Reports suggest Besiktas are keen on taking Klaassen off the Blues’ hands, as well as numerous clubs from his native Holland but his sky-high wages could deem to be a stumbling block in any potential move.
