Everton Top 10 Shirts

Ahead of Everton FC's annual 'Retro Day' against Everton's Old Boys, Sunderland - our mates over at Classic Football Shirts have provided us with their list of top 10 Everton shirts. [tps_start_button label="Start slideshow" style="" class=""] [tps_title]10. 1991-93 Home[/tps_title] Extremely classic design Umbro home shirt as worn in the inaugural season of the Premiership which brought Howard Kendall's second spell as boss to a close. With the messy pattern background this shirt is tied to the early 90s when music and fashion subtly influenced shirt design (tie-dye shirts anyone?). Memorably donned by Peter Beardsley in Sky Sports’ first ever advert for the new Premier League (with added Simple Minds and some bizarre shower scenes). Buy it here [tps_title]9. 2011-12 Home[/tps_title] The last home shirt produced by Le Coq Sportif in their fruitful 2 year spell this shirt was worn in a dramatic campaign where the side stormed through the second half of the season to climb to 7th and also reached the FA Cup semi-finals. Memorably worn in the remarkable 4-4 comeback away to United. Potentially the simplest home shirt produced for the side in the modern era, this shirt will stand the test of time well. Buy it here [tps_title]8. 2009-10 Third[/tps_title] Another rare number here with the ‘limited edition’ third which was released in 2009 to raise funds for Liverpool Unites - a charity partner supporting young people throughout Merseyside. Causes aside, this shirt is the only purple number in the clubs history and it’s hard not to appreciate a shirt which evokes comparisons with Fiorentina. David Moyes did his best Batistuta impression in promotional shots wearing the shirt on launch day! [tps_title]7. 1992-93 Third[/tps_title] Despite looking like a dish cloth this extremely rare Umbro shirt has stood the test of time well. With the bold stripe pattern throughout, the small badges, sponsor and subtle collar detail act to calm this one down and give it real classy feel. Despite the appeal, the shirt was only worn once (a 2-1 defeat away to Villa) in the inaugural season of the Premier League when the side finished mid-table and enjoyed a memorable home win against rivals Liverpool. Buy it here. [tps_title]6. 1986-88 Away[/tps_title] Rare away shirt with a bold chequered design which was the first to a feature a pattern in the design other than vertical stripes. Insignificant now but bold for Umbro at the time. The shirt also continued the clubs tradition of donning yellow away shirts, a tradition which began in the 50s as part of a wider trend of clubs wanting to emulate Brazil. In the 86-87 campaign they did just that, when Kendall and co sealed the title against all the odds. The 1986 home also features on this list so we’ll touch a little more on that there. Buy it here. [tps_title]5. 1997-99 Home[/tps_title] A messy designed shirt met with messy matters on the pitch for this one, as the side only narrowly avoided relegation (surviving on goal difference) in 1997-98 before recovering slightly to finish 14th in 1998-99. With a huge yellow and white sponsor, yellow and white Umbro detail to the sleeves and a ludicrously shiny look, this shirt is tied to the 90s when simplicity was thrown out of the window and everything was baggy. In response to the simple and sleek designs we see today this one gets a nod, purely because we’ll probably never see anything like it again. Oh, and who can forget Marco Materazzi beginning his journey to Champions League and World Cup immortality in this shirt via three sending offs in 27 games during 98-99. Buy it here. [tps_title]4. 1995-97 Home[/tps_title] Despite being worn in the somewhat drab 1996-97 campaign when Royle and Kanchelskis departed, this baggy Umbro classic 90s design number is best remembered for being worn against Manchester United in the 1995 FA Cup Final when Paul Rideout’s 30 minute header sealed a glorious 1-0 win at Wembley – its first (and best) appearance in a competitive match. A must for all Evertonians as this was the last shirt worn when a trophy was won. Subtle touches include the faint oversized club crest to the background on the front, a feature seen on many of Umbro’s mid-90s designs including the Ajax and Chelsea 1995 homes. Buy it here. [tps_title]3. 2010-11 Third[/tps_title] In a great season of Le Coq shirts with the simple design of all-blue home contrasting with the notorious fluorescent pink away this simple cream(ish) third stands out as one of the best millennial shirts. Worn only on the odd occasion, including away to Chelsea, the colour and simple design instantly gave this number a timeless, vintage feel on its release over six years ago. Modern classic and the highest non-Umbro design on the list. Buy it here. [tps_title]2. 1996-97 Away[/tps_title] It wouldn’t be a countdown without the odd controversial choice and this rare bumblebee away shirt is certainly one. The side started this campaign with much optimism after finishing 6th the previous year and boasting flying Russian winger Kanchelskis in the ranks. When the tricky wide-man left in January, and Royle resigned a few months later hopes faded as the side stumbled over the line to finish 15th. With bold black and yellow stripes and a baggy Umbro fit this shirt forms part of a brilliant era of football shirts in the 90s when designs brazenly toed the line between future classic and garish monstrosity. This design was also carried over into the 97-98 campaign with an added one 2 one sponsor. Buy it here. [tps_title]1. 1986-89 Home[/tps_title] Extremely rare home shirt with chequered vintage Umbro design and classic NEC sponsor memorably donned by the great side who became champions in 86-87. Despite losing Lineker to Barcelona and contending with an injury list which included the likes of Reid, Southall and Mountfield, Howard Kendall led the side to their second title in three years – an outstanding achievement against all the odds at the time. With a small Umbro logo and crest, the multi-tone chequered pattern did all the work on this one – tying the shirt to the period with a bold template which was also donned by other Umbro teams including Celtic, Man City and West Brom.
