Which Everton players should be let go?

Everton manager Roberto Martinez must make some big decisions this summer if the Toffees are to challenge for the top four next season.

Following a disappointing campaign, a number of players could be shown the exit door at Goodison Park as Martinez prepares for his third year on Merseyside.

Evertonian Elliott Bretland gives his verdict on who should be kept and which players should be let go…

GOALKEEPERS

Tim Howard

Howard has been poor and cost Everton vital points this term. The American fails to command his area, does not instil confidence and his kicking often sees the Toffees easily lose possession.

Now 36, it’s time for Howard to move aside and give up the No 1 spot.

VERDICT: LET GO – No longer good enough if Everton are going to challenge at the top.

Joel Robles

The Spaniard improved Everton’s shaky backline when he deputised for Howard from December to February and kept three clean sheets in his last three games for the club.

Joel showed he is capable of playing in the Premier League and could become the No 1 for many years to come.

VERDICT: KEEP – Joel has the potential to be a top-class stopper and Everton’s main man between the sticks for years to come.

Russell Griffiths

Signing a professional contract with the club last summer, Griffiths has featured on the Everton bench several times this season.

VERDICT: KEEP – Griffiths won the Under 18s title last term and deserves his chance.
