Everton confirm Vellios departure

Striker Apostolos Vellios has been released by Everton after failing to secure a first-team role at Goodison Park.

The 22-year-old Greek struggled to make an impact in English football after joining from Greek side Iraklis in 2011 and did not make a single first-team appearance for Everton this season despite being named on the bench a handful of times.

He was loaned out to Championship side Blackpool in March, but made just two starts before being recalled a month later and has been released by the club after scoring three goals in 24 games.

“I think it’s been a disappointing season for himself but he’s always had a terrific attitude and always a real desire to try to work hard for the team,” manager Roberto Martinez told Everton’s official website.

“He’s probably in a position now where, at a very young age still, he needs a new challenge and a new environment to show what he can do.

“We wish him well and I’m sure every Evertonian will follow me with that.”

Teenage goalkeeper Mason Springthorpe has also left Everton after his contract expired. The youngster was signed from Shrewsbury Town in February 2011 and made the first-team bench on a handful of occasions.
