McCarthy Scoops Annual Award

Midfielder named Football Association of Ireland´s Young International Player of the Year.

James McCarthy was named Young International Player of the Year at the award ceremony last night for the second successive season.

The 23-year-old was handed the prize at that ceremony in Dublin, adding to the award he won in 2012.

Meanwhile, Seamus Coleman and Shane Duffy missed out in their categories, having been shortlisted for the Senior and Under-21 Player of the Year awards respectively.

McCarthy, who has amassed 22 caps since making his international debut in 2010, came out on top despite competition from Aston Villa´s Ciaran Clark and Wigan´s James McClean.

Coleman was beaten to the senior prize by his nation´s record goalscorer Robbie Keane, while Watford´s Sean Murray took the Under-21 gong.

Past winners of the Senior award include former Everton players Kevin Kilbane (2004) and Richard Dunne (2007, 2011), while Keane previously took the evening´s top prize in 2009.

Other past recipients of the Young Player prize include Dunne, Darron Gibson and Aiden McGeady, while Coleman was named the best Under-21 player in both 2009 and 2010.

Congratulations James!
