Amidst the closing darkness, the lights of Goodison illuminate the night sky. There is something almost elemental in their draw, pulling us towards the ground with promises of warmth and security, to be amongst your own, shielded from the cold of the coming night. Inside, the artificial light recasts sights so familiar to our eyes, the pitch heightened in its verdant lushness, the Blue of those shirts more richly royal. You know light itself cannot change an atmosphere but somehow, magically, it does. Inexplicably the crowd roars that bit louder, songs are sung with greater emotion. There is sorcery at work here, the luminosity of the place forging a deeper connection between fan and club. So much so that ‘Goodison Under the Lights’ becomes more than a mere description and instead morphs into something approaching a state of mind.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Celebrated artist Ben Ark, wonderfully encapsulates the magic of the Goodison Park under the lights.
Ben Ark is a contemporary northern artist whose work has been exhibited in The Lowry. His artworks combine traditional painting techniques with digital technology. Ben’s style deliberately slips from precise photorealistic detail to less defined washes of colour. He uses a balance of detail, symmetry and movement to create artworks largely featuring urban landscapes and contemporary culture in the North West of England.
