Would say it was a good achievement but given bale isn't included and dejan Lovren is its obviously a lazy list based almost purely on the world cup.
I really don't like defending Liverpool players, but let's be honest, if one of our players played in the Champions League and World Cup finals within a month or so of each other we'd be pretty peeved at them not being acknowledged as quite good.

I wonder if due to his lack of English they are trying to give him a basic understanding of the language before he plays, as out of all of the positions on the pitch, communication between keepers and defence is most important.

Well that’s the case with man marking as well isn’t it? A decent corner taker would be able to bypass him and cross to who ever Baines is marking.

Man to man you can pair your big players up against theirs , zonal you don’t . So you can have baines or Davies or Coleman going up against 6”4 CB that attack their zone

Easy this football lark isn’t it?

To prevent set piece goals you just put the big guys on the big guys and not so big guys on not so big guys....it can’t be that simple can it? Reckon everyone would do that if that’s all there was to it tbh.

My understanding of zonal is that every player has their zone and attacks the ball if it comes into it? So... saying Mina is front post, that’s his zone, and I’m an opposing player that is 6”4 or whatever, I would just run to the zone that baines, Davies etc are defending. Andecent corner taker should be able to work out where Mina is and bypass him surely.
To take that a step further... what’s to stop a team sticking 3 or 4 in 1 zone to totally out number our defender?

Zones can overlap to help deal with overloading - Venn diagram style. And if an attacking side puts 3 or 4 in one small area it's gonna be hard for them to get a run on the ball without tripping over each other. Also, if the corner isn't perfect you've took 3 or 4 of your most effective target men out of the set-piece in one fell swoop.

Look at England in the WC - That strange line-up they did on attacking corners helped pull man-markers out of position and when the ball was being played they all ran to different areas rather than overloading anywhere. A zonal system would arguably have worked better against it.

There isn't a massive amount of difference in effectiveness between zonal and man. Both systems fall down when the attacker comes up against a defender not doing their job.

I’ll expect to see him involved in the match day squad on Sunday.

I’d love some regular updates on our biggest area of concern. Have you seen our defence this season?

Well he hasn't trained prior to this week - if he is back this week with the rest of the squad. So if he isn't ready he won't be involved.

The regular updates have been provided. They are given in every presser and there was literally an entire website article on it prior to the Rotherham game.

There are none so blind as those who will not see...

The reason we're bad in defence is because zonal marking is garbage

I'm not sure what the introduction of one player is supposed to achieve on that front if I'm honest

Well, zonal marking done correctly isn't garbage - pretty sure most of the best coaches use it.

Zonal marking not done correctly (which we're currently not doing, partly down to coaching I think and a lot down to the players simply not doing what they're told either - namely Tosun and Holgate as the regular guilty parties) is a s***show of the highest order.

We've played Digne and Zouma together and the defensive issues were still there

I strongly doubt adding Mina is going to drastically improve things

Again, things will be better than they are now, but if people think Mina is going to magically make this problem go away then they are only going to end up disappointed I think

The system is a bad system and needs overhauling

I hope I'm wrong of course

Well Mikey, adding a 6'5 cb whose main strength is in the air will probably help a tad - i.e. he and Zouma should be pretty dominant.

Lovren is good.

He also makes terrible decisions.

It's weird. Probably a bit like Mina will be. Really brilliant but might be prone to the odd brain fart.
