The reason we're bad in defence is because zonal marking is garbage

I'm not sure what the introduction of one player is supposed to achieve on that front if I'm honest
Zonal marking works fine if it is implemented correctly and the players fully understand their roles. Our zonal marking is garbage atm. But we've played a different centre half and midfield partnership every game so the understanding won't be there yet. If in 10 games time we are still conceding the same awful goals then Silva is doing something very wrong.

As for adding Mina into the mix, increasing the height and aerial ability to defend crosses will always improve our ability to defend corners.

..I do think it’s more about the players who global mark than global marking. My preference is also man-to-man but teams (not us) have got so clever at blocking defenders off that even that system inevitably leaves a player free. I can understand why so many coaches are deviating to global marking, but whatever system you use, it’s down to the players to make it work.

I notice the OS are giving Mina’s return date as ‘unknown’, which doesn’t exactly fill you with confidence.

I'm not against Mina btw, just unsure why everyone is acting like he'll magically fix everything

I think in theory mate, Mina makes a big difference. Having a lad who leaps and is 6 ft 5 is bound to help any team. In a zonal marking side probably more so as you can't (or shouldn't) be able to run him under the ball.

It's probably a bit more complex though. Our issue is we lose a lot of first balls at the near post and we are ill disciplined when it comes to the 2nd ball. We have a zone outside of our 6 yard box 3-6 yards out completely empty. It is symptomatic of a side that everyone is facing the first ball and not holding their positions well enough.

It's strange as Tosun attacks the ball so well in the opponents area but it is quite a different skill. He's a big lad who's good in the air but seems ill suited to that role. We probably need to find a new player in that position. Possibly Mina could do that. It would be unconventional to have your biggest aerial threat in what is a relatively innocuous zone but that is the root of much of our problems.

Alongside that we do have to do better on 2nd balls though. If you the man who's zone is the back post while it's important you shuffle across you shouldn't go past the centre of the goal really. In doing so, in many ways thats a bigger mistake than Tosun missing the first header. You will sometimes lose headers, but you should have no excuse for not keeping shape. I remember playing fullback and coaches would always say you should never go past the goal and in many ways its the same thing. It's a critical zone and in truth had we have kept men in there it's unlikely we'd have conceded at Bournemouth or Southampton and may well have even stopped the Huddersfield goal.

Should have gone for Lascelles instead. What a farce this situation is. Most important position we needed to strengthen in and we bought a lad who hasn't had a training session in over a month.

Weird that he was in Barcelona's training videos, but then he has this 'injury' here.
maybe its hit him when he walked into the training ground, he is used to seeing messi and dembele doing intricate one twos and instead saw tosun boot one out the park from 2 yards out and pickford kick the ball out of play from a goal kick

O
But what is one guy going to do?

The system is as much the issue as the players
when Mina and Zouma are fit we will have 2 CB who can
Attack a high ball and clear it
Hold a high line as they have the pace to recover a ball over the top and through the lines
They can both carry a ball out of defence allowing our midfield to receive the ball higher up the pitch and our attackers to be further up the pitch
Midfield will be a bit more expansive knowing they have 2 good CBs who can cope behind them

And now one of top 20 defenders in the World lol

Do FIFA and Everton not listen to grandoldteam dot com forward slash forum???
