yakubu and the curse of the record fee

Player Valuation: £35m
Yakubu has been an everton player for about four weeks and already people are saying he is worse than Beattie.

Where Beattie was fat, Yakubu is lazy. But, we paid £11 million plus for him, so he is our punchbag, someone to blame, someone to immediately jump on when things go wrong. Most importantly we mustn't show any support for him from the word off.

Can't we wait until Moyes has moulded him into the player we want and he has had time to gel with the other players before we cast these judgements?

So his effort and possibly fitness need to improve - and he needs to score more goals. Given an improved midfield and a run of form I'm sure this will happen.

Forget about how much we paid for him and putting him under a microscope - and start supporting him. The crowd turned on Beattie so quickly, but with Yakubu we seem to be setting some kind of record.

With enough encouragement he could become a goodison legend.

But will we show him that?

If he's good enough you don't even need to start this thread. For 11 million he should be as good as Barbatov. We don't have a sugar daddy, whatever we pay for is with our hard earn money, and as far as I've seen, all the criticism is justified.

I'll change my view ONLY IF HE shows enough quality or improvement. Just like how faddy won me over, slowly but surely.

Well one thing is for sure.

People expecting Yak to run around the pitch like AJ will be disappointed as that isn't and never has been his game.

You don't need to run around to be a good striker, sheringham, zola, berbatov and bergkamp are all examples of striker with good technical skills, vision and finishing without the marathon attributes.

If we break our transfer record and pay over 11 million for a striker Im expecting the finished article.

If he scores on Thursday then gets the winner against the [Poor language removed] then he's immune from flak. Simple as that.

Berbatov didn't exactly set the world on fire in the first half of the season, and to be honest hasn't started this season well either. If Yak emulates his second half of last season though there will be few complaints.

He hasnt demonstrated particularly great finishing so far - his goals have been tap ins. A lot of his shots from the edge of the box have been pearollers - I thought that was one of his specialities.

So far he's been encouraging at times (eg against Man U before he tired out) and crap at times. But so has Vic and so has AJ. And so have Everton as a whole.

Basically, i'll reserve judgement till the end of the season, but he needs to get goals first and foremost. Preferably important goals. For us. Or he should be benched.

We should all forget his record for other teams - and his price tag (which we'll probably recoup anyway if/when we sell)

your missing the point. how does criticism help him become a better player for us?

Thousands of fans getting on his back the second he dons the blue shirt, because a player worth £11 million should score two goals a game, one off his arse whilst blindfolded presumably.

get real. nothing is guaranteed but why be so quick to judge?

if yakubu is as prolific here as he was elsewhere it will be money well spent. If he is not, then we should look to why. (and we should bear in mind that another striker had just failed here). Is it poor service from midfield? Is it that many evertonians like yourself aren't willing to give a player time to settle at a club?

Tevez started [Poor language removed], Berbatov started [Poor language removed], Martins started [Poor language removed], need me to go on? Its undeserved criticism he is getting, he isnt Fernando Torres worth 25mil and maybe thats why he hasnt pleased us with a hat-trick yet.

He has scored goals so far, who gives a [Poor language removed] how as long as he is tucking the opportunities away. I have every faith in Yakubu doing well for us.

Tevez, Berbatov and Torres came from different leagues and therefore could afforded time to settle in.

Yakubu has been here for beards. I hope he does come good, I just dont like lazy bastards in the blue shirt.

I think his work rate needs to be improved but the moniker "lazy [Poor language removed]" is a little swift in my opinion.

Dont get me wrong, if he does [Poor language removed] all for 90 minutes but puts the ball in the net twice then thats sound.

I just think that we could have got better for our money.

He should accept criticism and work his ass off to improve, not dwell on it. That's the only way to improve and I don't see the reason it's wrong to criticise when he's simply not good enough.

For 11 million I'm expecting someone who could bring us to another level or maybe give the front line something we're currently lack of. Unless you have different expectation.

Judging from the way he use the ball when he's in possession, 11 million is a waste...
Waiting for him to prove me wrong.

mate , its not coza the fee why im unsure , its his general demeanour , and the fact hes marooned on the left wing most of the time . ive never booed an everton player in near 40 yrs of going regular , home and away . i don't see the point , to me , booers are no longer supporters . who ever heard of a player playing better coz of such treatment ?? however , i see that others , who also pay their dough , feel different .

lets have it right . if you were looking to impress your new club , would you , pull it out early doors , a la t. c. , or like this fella , look decidely unmotivated early doors , and look to pull it back in a few games ?? what i expect from a record buy , is knowing what the [Poor language removed]'s required , irrespective of ability to deliver , not 2 goals a game , tho that would be nice . ill give him a fair crack , but as i mentioned elsewhere , for all beats was called to [Poor language removed] , lets see if yak celebrates an everton goal whilst warming up , as did our erstwhile record buy ?? i reiterate , i hope he gets 30 by easter , just cant see it on the evidence provided thus far . nil satis nisi optimum . lcab (y)
