..went out with my son for a pint and watch the game last night and we were chatting about Pavard. I like a bit of size in my defenders and he’s 6ft 1in, it really helps. He’s only been playing 2nd tier football at Stuttgart so Deschamps did well selecting him.
Yep, looks very good. I think Stuttgart will be hard pressed to retain him now. City and Bayern sniffing around according to the papers.

..hardly a Brazilian in sight.

Some fine CBs on display, can’t argue with Varane/Godin but Maguire/Stones; Sanchez/Mina played well as partnerships.

The French RB, Pavard, looks a player and Trippier had a fine tournament. I like the Uruguayan lad that Arsenal just bought - Torreira.

Mbappe and Hazard quality make them stand outs.

Good thread.
Thiago Silva would be the one that gets closest for me, still a fine player, but outdone by Varane and a couple of others. Varane has such athletism and reading he plays as almost a CH who can cover a sweeper position at the same time. Thought the same in the champs league final, especially while the RS still looked dangerous he covered his back line masterfully. CH a very strong position at this world cup

..as I endlessly repeat, I love that athleticism you refer to, particularly in defenders. Everton needs players with Rolls Royce engines. Agree, about Thiago Silva.

yeah agreed, the two columbian boys had it in spades also

..and attitude. The powers of recovery, particularly from Sanchez was tremendous. I appreciate recovery often makes up for poor positioning and mistakes, but defenders like that are tough to play against. Both are young and their all around game will improve.

Manager: Bob - yes there were displays of tactical naveity but holy hell he made this this tourney fun and was at least partially responsible for the best moment in the tourney.

I haven't made a WC 11 yet because I would be tempted to put Ashley Young on it.

Mine:

GK Courtois

RB Trippier
LB Lucas Hernandez (no left back stood out for me tbh so he gets in for the ARG game alone)
CB Varane
CB Gimenez

DM Casemiro
CM Modric
CM Pogba

RW Mbappe
LW Perisic
CF Lukaku

Hazard was the best player of the tournament for me, but it's hard to do an 11 with a proper formation as that would mean leaving Perisic out and he was also a stand out player.

I'd have to find a way to get them both in and go with:

Pickford (England)
Trippier (England)
Varane (France)
Maguire (England)
Strinic (Croatia)
De Bruyne (Belgium)
Modric (Croatia)
Perisic (Croatia)
Mbappe (France)
Griezmann (France)
Hazard (Belgium)

All players who played in the Semi Finals or beyond.

Lloris

Trippier
Varane
Umtiti
Strinic

Pogba
Modric
Casemiro (just over kante)

Mbappe
Giroud
Hazard

Deschamp

Hate to say it but if Firmino had played over Jesus he would of been in the team and Brazil would probably of gone a bit further if not won it .

Notable mentions for Pavard, Pickford, Inui, perisic , Maguire and obviously Ronaldo .

Neymar the absolute failure of the tournament.though .

Giroud is a pretty good shout. I kind of thought went the tourney started he was going to be the weak link. However he was a pest and was a menace for defenses. I don't think they win the thing w/o him. If only Koenman had the chance to ruin him maybe Belgium or Croatia wins this thing.
