It's a bit of cloth. All flags are. I've hheard about but don't get the hysterics involved with the flag. Do other nations do this?
Some do. Brazil seems to get quite touchy about the flag. I wouldn't imagine it goes down to well in North Korea either.

I don't get it either (I don't get nationalism in any form, it's pure luck where you are born) but they are not the only ones who do it, we probably hear about it more as the USA is more ingrained into our culture and they speak the same language etc.

US Flag code says that the flag should never touch the ground. This portion of the code...and many (most) other portions... are violated by the general public all the time.
The same folks that have their panties in a bunch over this are often the same ones that wear flag clothes, incorrectly hang US flags including lack of lighting at night, leave up tattered/torn/faded flags, etc all of which are violations of the code. They also get ticked off if you correct them. I know as I have corrected many folks with never a polite reply let alone a thank you.

In the context of the situation, I don't think there was ill intent just ignorance (notice another player quickly picked it up).

Yeah - I was aware that there were strict rules. I just don't get the need for them for any nation. I mean - someone posts a video of them burning a flag and sabres start being rattled and war could be the result.

Far better to have the attitude - yeah great well done you, it's a piece of cloth and you paid for it, knock yourself out.

War unlikely.

Same applies to the quran not just the flag loons. Why open the door to conflict over a mass produced object .

I'd be embarrassed. Half the time you see the union flag it's upside down. You point it out to someone and they righyly think you're a twit with nothing better to do..

Same here. Interesting fun fact about the Merican flag; the original, or at least what it was based on, is in Bristol Cathedral. It was the coat of arms of the Bishop at the time John Cabot invented Merica.

He was actually the Bishop (or arch bishop, wasnt born), of Mercia.

This is a hard one for me. My dad is military. I was raised a certain way so personally would not and do violate the flag code and admit, I don't like to see the code violated.

That said -- first amendment rights. It is only code (advisory) not law so I accept that a person can do whatever they want to the flag. Freedom of expression and all that.
And to be frank, much rather a person or country mad at the US burn/deface a flag to express that than harm people.

My issue with the complaints is the hypocrisy. People violate the code all the time because it suits their idea of patriotism, but get mad when others violate the code in a way they don't like.
