Obviously you're at a huge advantage if you went to public school etc (you would be with most sports, including the summer Olympic events), but people can get into the sport who have modest backgrounds and brought up on modest incomes.

On Lindsey Vonn, I think she was incredibly stupid to take the risk she did. But it’s not like she’s been given some pass to be at the Olympics just because of who she is.
I have no idea about downhill skiing but having read up a bit about it she was ranked 6th in the current World Cup standings and has won events over the past year. She’s ranked higher than Johnson who won it.
This was her last Olympics and she decided it was worth the risk. She didn’t take anyone’s spot unfairly, she didn’t make it all about herself. If that’s your gripe then it’s on the media, not her.
