William Carvalho

I think a lot of the problems people have with him are that he plays a position that doesn't traditionally exist in the English game.

He plays the pivot role, his job is to literally take the ball and spread it out to the wings whilst screening the back 4.

People complaining he doesn't drive forward or fly about the pitch are missing entirely what the role is. Same job Busquets does for Barcelona - a role he is the best in the world at but gets no glory.

In isolation the role wouldn't work in the PL but if the whole team are set up to play in that system we'd do very well. We can hardly claim PL football teams would steam roller teams who play this style when any half decent Portugese/Italian/Spanish club play us off the park by keeping their shape and picking us off when our "box to box" players are caught up pitch.

He's clearly talented on the ball and shields the defence well. I don't buy into the 'our league's too fast' theory either.

The problem we'd have (if we were even interested) is that he'd get hounded out by the fans as he doesn't run around like a madman when on the recovery. People hate Schneiderlin for not looking like he cares, imagine what they'd think of someone new coming in who moves like he's playing in a testimonial.

The way Goodison is and off the season we just had, we need players who can get around the pitch to create an atmosphere. People loved Besic because he'd hassle and harry all the time and completely ignore the fact he's jarg.

That Torreira would have been ideal for us but it seems like he's off to Arsenal, unfortunately.

It wasn't that he looked like he didn't care - it was that he quite blatantly didn't care. It wasn't his playing style that was the issue - it was the fact he visibly downed tools.

Nobody is saying Carvalho isn't trying when he plays - if we signed him and it looks like he's running through molasses and getting made to look silly, it'd be because of his skillset, not his attitude. With Schneiderlin, that isn't the case.

Completely correct assessment. But realistically we can't expect Everton to transition into Barcelona, so it's pointless to even attempt it. Indeed, if that's what Brands/Silva have in mind then I'd be very worried that we're going down the Martinez route of theory over pragmatism again.

Had his best World Cup game last night. Tackled well, always available, and got the ball forward and out to the wingers well.

But think we need someone who can carry the ball, as all our current central midfielders are players who win/intercept the ball, and look to pass to someone more creative - do we need another of this type?

We need a midfielder willing to carry the ball and get past a player. Sort of a Barkley but who’s not a snake.

If that was his best God help him,he played the obvious pass and a few times was lucky to complete even those.Never did anything incisive.Unless Silva is playing a huge joke by saying he wants us to play a dynamic high pressing game??

It was definitely his best World Cup game, the other 3 I thought he was awful or anonymous.

Thought he used the ball well without doing anything incisive, but as I said that’s absolutely not his game, we have enough players who breakup play and the make the easy short pass.

Koeman also said he wanted us plying a high pressing game and that lasted the first half of his first game of his first season, so we’ve got form for falling for that one.

I wouldn't argue it wasn't his best game, just that it wouldn't be difficult to top the others. He truly is the mogadon midfielder.
