I don’t think we will do it, part of me thinks some of the players are like us, just trying to get to 40 points, then the flip flops will come out and they will ricochet into the end of the season and the World Cup.

What ever way you cook it, it’s been a bad season and we are too far adrift of the teams above us to do anything meaningful now, unless we put together a massive 10 game winning run.

Aside from when we finished 4th which is our highest league finish in the PL era, I think our best all round season this Century was 2007/08. Achieved by Moyes who had less resources than any of the managers mentioned on this thread, and inherited the worst team when initially taking over.

DaveK and the pro Martinez supporters often point to Martinez' Cup runs to excuse his pathetic league achievements in the 2nd and 3rd seasons so compare them to this from Moyes' Everton in 07/08.

Europe
  • Got through the qualifiers in the Ukraine
  • Cruised through the group stages winning all 4 games, with Osman scoring arguably the Everton team goal of this Century against Larissa. We beat the eventual winners Zenit in that group and won away at AZ Alkmaar becoming the first side to beat them at home in Europe. After the Alkmaar win we were unbeaten in 13 games
  • Demolished SK Brann in the next round 8-1 on aggregate before being desperately unlucky to go out on penalties against Fiorentina
League
  • Came 5th with 65 points
  • Hammered Sunderland 7-1 at home
Cup
  • Got to the Semi Final of the League Cup
That is evidence of how you cope with the demands of 2 out of the 3 Cup competitions, and perform great in the league. Something Martinez just couldn't do.

Rolled over, raised our rears, parted our cheeks, rubbed some baby oil in and said: "Go on then, give us your best"

To give credit where it's due, under Martinez we smashed Arsenal at Goodison, and we were unlucky not to win at the Emirates with him as well.

Bit like last season, except our bunch of cowards managed to lose to an Arsenal side that were reduced to 10 men after 14 minutes and still went on to concede 2 more goals whilst playing 11 v 10 lol.
