Wifi - who has it?

So the ipod touch is b/g spec. If you wanna do it cheaply, just get a 802.11g router.

Apple - iPod touch - Technical specifications for iPod touch.

And here is a decent guide to buying a router:

Wireless (WiFi) Router Buying Guide - Reviews by PC Magazine

Is that a potential problem Dylan?

The reason I ask is that she also has a lap top, and I've been considering putting my old pc in her room too.

The lap top should have wifi. ( edit: apparently not ).
The old pc will need a card.
My downstairs pc needs a router.

Correct?

Do I presume then that the ipod won't run on an 'N' router, and therefore must be a 'G' ?

Do I presume that the lap top will run on 'N' ?

And the card? Is that one or the other?

Basically I'm trying to ask if I have a potential problem regarding whether to buy N or G, or finding one that does the job for all.

Appreciate the help. (y)

The N routers have options to run at b/g freqs, just a setting. Then you have the fancy dual-band routers that broagcast b/g and n at the same time (like the one I have does, to connect my myriad of different devices)

The laptop will run on n if you buy a n compatible network card. If it is an older laptop it will likely have a b/g built in card (if it has built-in), only the newest laptops come with n, and half the time they are only on custom builds.

To sum up (also based on if I don't know if your laptop has a wireless card built in) you will need a router, a card for the pc and a card for the laptop.

To give an example of how this all works, my dual band connects my laptop on the n band and then it connects our 2 Blackberries, Wii, PSP and 3 DS's all on G. Then the main computer and Xbox are connected hard-wire (nothing beats a direct cable for speed)

As Dylan's already said, just make sure your connections encrypted...preferably with WPA2. Just don't use WEP, it's weak and easily cracked.

On top of that I, personally, also choose to allow access strictly to the the MAC addresses I've listed as an extra precaution. MAC addy's can be spoofed but coupled with encryption it's just another added way of restricting access that incurs no penalty, so why not. You can also set the router not to broadcast the ESSID so that it's not visible to anyone in ear shot.

Do those three things and you should be set against the general wi-fi abuser and script kiddy.

I thought you threw it on the telephone socket??

In all seriousness, you can put a password onto the network, so only people with that password can connect. I think it's a 13 letter password.

You can change it to make it something you'll remember, and if you click on whatever device that uses it to remember the password it will automatically start up with you asking for it every time.

i didnt secure mine and now i cant figure out how to. not that arshed tbh cos , well i'm just not. next door didnt either so i used to log onto it if mine was on the blink.
mine connects to my laptop, daughters netbook, the wii, the 2 ds lites and i have an old p990i sony erriccssonnn phone(brand new) that can as well. i just wish i could plug my virgin box into it so that i could view the tv on the laptop, that way when a game is on i could watch it upstairs.

Wifi is the go.

In my place theres my a pc, 3 laptops and PS3 all 'hooked' up wirelessly, no dramas.

And encrypt for sure.

After speaking with Virgin, they've agreed ( after a little begging on my part ) to send me out an ' N ' Router and an ' N ' Adapter.

These :
Wireless routers - Broadband - Virgin Media

Presuming that the ' N ' gear should be compliant with ' G ' , then that should be me sorted to be able to use my other pc upstairs, and also send a signal on ' G ' to the ipod if I switch the router to ' mixed '.

Correct?

Do they have any actual model info? If it is a plain N router then it will be able to broadcast on only one freq (ie, either N or G, but not both).

That is the choice to make.......go for speed but limited connectivity (your daughters ipod wouldnt be able to connect to the N signal being a G device) or go for the connectivety but limit your overall speed.

See if you can get a dual band router out of them that broadcasts N an G freq's simultaneously.

They basically said they'd get one out to me within 7 days.
I'm kind of hoping it will be dual so keeping fingers crossed. If it's not, I've not lost anything. As far as I know, they're the 2 models that they do so the N one is the one in the link.
I can't push it too far as they wanted me to pay for everthing originally. I had to beg borrow and steal to get the adapter too.

If it turns out to be a single band, then just run it at G speeds and have everything connect. If it is dual band, then great! Connect everything and stick the adapter in the other computer and run it on N!!!
