Wifi - who has it?

Well, you folks were right.
They do indeed want me to stay for another 12 months in return for giving me the equipment.

The router and adapter haven't arrived yet, but the letter did.
Typical.

Also, the customer service rep said she thinks it's the netgear router they're sending as opposed to the D Link, but it will be the N all the same.

Wasn't too happy about the new 12 month thing, as it hadn't been discussed with me in the first instance.

BTW, are their any iphone deals out there with free internet etc for less than £20 a month, hopefully with free Lap top or iphone?
I've seen some deals with other phones but not sure on the quality.
I want to use the internet while I'm working, but not necessarily have to pay a contract if I can help it.

Slightly off topic, your daughter can get wifi access via the cloud when she's out and about for £3.99 per month. Gives her access in places like Starbucks, Mcdonalds etc etc

OK back to your question, the cheapest tariff you'll get for an iPhone on O2 is £35 per month, Orange £30 per month, and Vodafone £30.

I don't believe you are able to buy an iPhone from anyone but the networks direct and carphone warehouse.

For net use it appears that if you are a heavy user, O2 is the only route to chose, as the other networks restrict the amount of data you can download (capping).

This is a pretty good website to use for mobile deals:

Mobile Phones - Buy Mobile Phones with Free Gifts and Cashback

Basically the same as the one you've currently shown

The problem you'll have with a £20 tariff is that the networks want to make money, so they wont subsidise an expensive phone with that kind of tariff. The networks use something called ARPU (Average revenue per user), which in english means you'll get more of a return the more you spend.

If you want a cheap tariff with unlimited date; try o2 simplicity tariff. they do a sim card for £10, which you can add a 7.50 internet data package onto. It won't give you free wifi mind, but it could be very handy if you buy a cheap handset off e bay or have a sim card slot in your laptop

You haven't said how many minutes/ text you want? or what you want to use the internet access for?? That would help

Finally there's an Apple tablet being announced on the 27th of this month, the rumour is that it will be heavily subsidised with a data contract. This might be a good solution for you, depending on what you want to do. It might also be very good indirect news for you too, in that it could bring competition to this kind of market and bring the cost of other tablet type devices down to compete.

Hope that wasn't too confusing

As for the D link, I'd take the Netgear any day of the weak over the D link. Netgears are pretty easy to set up and generally have very regular firmware updates to resolve any issues, should you experience any

For got to mention, it's worth checking out T mobile, they do some sort of web and walk tariff or something.

At the moment T mobile have a half price sale on their pay as you go phones, but the bonus is that the sims come with free texts and internet for life when you top up with £10. Not sure if there is some sort of capping involved in that one, but could be a good option.

You can always buy a second hand iphone and get it unlocked and pop that T mobile sim card in it (y)

Big thanks for the effort you guys have offered.
Rep given.

Regarding my useage, basically so I can gab on places like this, maybe watch a bit of youtube, and general internet browsing when the job is quiet.
Basically to get me working more and typing in the house less.
Phone wise, I'm not a huge gabber, so don't need much.

I thought about just buying an ipod Touch myself, but if it can't guarantee internet from any location, it might be bad for me if there's no signal near the stands/ranks.

You could always try borrowing your daughters iPod touch, go into settings and then wifi, and see if any networks appear near the places you're parked up (I'm assuming by ranks you mean you're a taxi driver).

You might get lucky as some phone boxes give off wifi signals, so it's worth having a test run and seeing if you are near any of the public wifi networks.

If you are, then iPod touch with a 3.99 tariff should suit you if you just want it for net access

£3.99 tariff for what?
The Ipod gets free internet through wifi, so not sure what you mean sorry.

The free internet, is only free because you're either using your home service, which you've already paid for, or people haven't locked their wireless networks, which means you can piggy back their service.

Free services in commercial premises etc are free because you're using a public access point that doesn't charge, there are some, but the majority of public access points charge for wifi access. The 3.99 is so you can gain access to these services

Wifi isn't free as such, someone somewhere has to pay for it. The free bit only comes in when someone either hasn't locked their service, or has decided they want to provide that service for free

Ah, I understand now.
It's something that helps the appliance receive the net in places it wouldn't ordinarily be able to?

Again thanks mate.

Some hotspots are encrypted, so you would be paying the fee for the access to those encrypted hotspots.
