A couple of years ago, I though we were moving to a Tesco car park in Kirby. We also had pre-seasons when we would sell Arteta on deadline day only to bring in Staq and Drenthe on loan.
Compared to then, things feel great. Doesn't feel like there is much to worry about regarding Everton at the moment.
Am I too concerned about the new ground? no, I'm hearing all the right noises. Compared to where we have been, its very positive.
Can we compete financially for decent players? yes. Tonight Neville said Everton couldn't finish higher than 7th because we can't compete financially with the team above us. I disagree with this.
Spurs matched out very decent offer for Sissoko, so he moved to the Champions League Club. But the move didn't collapse because we did't have the funds.
Moshiri told Jim White that we matched Chelsea's bid for Koulibaly. If that's true, the bid would have been around the £40 million mark. If that deal would have gone through, it wouldn't have just broken our transfer record, but Tottenham and Liverpool's as well. Maybe Moshiri was fibbing, can't be ruled out. But if Moshiri is being truthful, we can compete financially with some of the teams above us. That's unchartered territory for the post 1995 Premier League.
How do I feel about our newish manager? Happy. We aren't playing great football but when the results arn't going well you go back to basics. If we finish 7th this season, I consider that an improvement on two consecutive 11th placed finishes. I would rather win playing industrial, than lose playing it fancy. I would also hope that by finishing 7th we would have more credibility when trying to attract our top targets in the summer.
But as a team, we have won more points from losing positions than any other team in the league. The team that was destroyed by Sunderland and Leicester in April/ May was shell shocked. So I'm prepared to give Koeman credit for installing some tenacity and spirit. That had gone under Martinez.
At the halfway point we are 7th and we are entering a transfer window were we are supposed to have some decent money to spend.
Compared to how things have been in years gone by, things are positive.
