Why nobody messes with Big Dunc...

I have to agree with those who say he was our talisman through some pretty awful times in the late 90s.
I was a season ticket holder back then and it was worth every penny just to watch Big Dunc. You always felt like something was going to happen with him in the team, whether it be a classy goal or just terrorising the opposition, mentally and physically.
I for one would have a Big Dunc type of player back in a heartbeat. Passion, presence and bucket loads of aggression when needed; and sometimes when not needed!

This is the big con though.

He had passion and presence when it suited him. This is a massive point for me. His aggression, whilst a useful commodity, was totally misplaced more often than not.

Yeah he would usually turn up against Liverpool, maybe turn up against United and that's about it. In many games he would just amble about, and more often than not wouldn't even be available for selection as he was either injured (hardly surprising if the story is true) or suspended for doing something stupid against one of the "lesser teams" which were the games we needed him the most in.

We all loved him scoring goals and ruffling feathers against Liverpool, but seeing as we were massively crap during most of his spell with us we really could have done with him scoring goals and ruffling feathers against the likes of Derby County, Leicester City and Bolton Wanderers. Clubs who were down the bottom of the league with us, clubs who we desperately needed points from. But no, instead he gets himself sent off because he was a dope who couldn't control himself. Even our best moment whilst he was at the club (The Fa Cup win) he had no input in the semi final and barely touched the ball in the final.

He was a very talented player I reckon, and yeah he gave us some great moments. He is a cult icon more than anything. Certainly not a legend in terms of end results. He gave us a laugh with his stupid antics and some real moments of quality (as he had all the talent in the world).

Give me Kevin Campbell any day.

looks like the oblitiration and annhilation of Big Duncs reputation as an Everton icon is complete, build them up then smash them down,it seems to be the Everton way ?

Can't argue with any of that Papa.

Sadly the Everton way these days seems to be to make icons out of players who have been pretty average for us. It comes with the territory of not winning anything for ages I suppose.

I heard he spat in Martinez’s face and told him he’d shag his daughter if he didn’t keep him on when Bobby was manager lol

Top blue loves the Club would run through brick walls

I researched some old Everton pictures last night on the old picture thread lol
My he was dog rough no wonder his disciplinary record was awful - here's an aerial challenge with the red lots Hyypia-lol eye -eye what's he coaching how to be a bouncer in a club?......:D

Totally accept he had plenty of shortcomings that didn't help his career, but you have got to admit he was a player that Blues always looked to stir things up and motivate others, inspirational even ! so think rating him as average is a bit off the mark ?

Nah not really.

Ferguson had the potential to be a fantastic player. He was a lot better than many give him credit for ability wise. However he did not show that often enough due to a combination of being injured or suspended or just not bothering a lot of the time. What he did provide was great memories especially against Liverpool and Man Utd and he was our most important player back then which makes his missing loads of games even more annoying.

Again he was inspirational and motivational when he could be bothered and when he could be bothered it was great, but it wasn't often enough. I like my heroes to give their all every single game (Cahill for example).

sent off 8 times injured a lot a great icon , but never a legend .....
his stats are poor in the appearances v goalscoring department when he left for newcastle BK should never have fetched him back imo!

He was my lads absolute hero when he was a kid. He cried his eyes out the night he went to Newcastle.
That's good enough for me.
