Why is racism creeping into British football again?

I don't think racism is on the increase in football to any meaningful degree.

Certain clubs have more imbeciles than others but that is the same for society as a whole.

In the smoke Spurs and Woolwich have almost zero racist element while West Ham and Chelsea have more. But I would suggest even that is neligible.

That whole banana skin incident of ours was blown out of all proportion, exacerbated by social media Warriors (guilty until proven innocent). People actually seemed desperate for it to be 'racist' even after the police said it wasn't.

Anyone who tries to isolate these attitudes just to football fans is deluded, it's rampant everywhere in all organisations in the countrt

I honestly think it's a global thing at this moment. I remember watching a special with Henry where he said things were progressing in the US where as in Europe they've stayed the same or gotten worse.

All the major football nations have had issues with this. Funny thing is, I dont think the US was ever less racist than European football nations. Our best athletes have always been black for the majority of adults lives now.

It is an interesting thing to look at. In the UK and Europe, it seems that's where racists feel emboldened, at sporting events. In the US, sporting events are the place people who drop n bombs every day of the week avoid it because the people they hate are the ones who can bring them joy for that cause.

Trump and Brexit have given racism a sort of respectability.
No they haven't. Racists will always act like racists when it suits them. The only connection between those two votes and a potential rise in racism is that because of them, people now look far closer at every insult and overthink it. A lot of the time such inspection is warranted and very much justified but often it's well OTT and leads to people thinking that racism is in places, comments and even arguments were it simpley wasn't.

I know we’ve had this discussion before mate and I know he’s a spurs fan but the bloke in question was literally found guilty. The people desperate to find it racist include the magistrate who convicted him , the very person whose job it is to decide guilt rather than collect and present evidence without judgement which is the police’s job. For the avoidance of any confusion this is what was said at the conclusion of the case

Magistrate Mervyn Mandell said: "We find it was a targeted gesture to throw a banana skin after a goal was scored by a black player. "We have in the circumstances found the racial element was there."

Football reflects society but where it differs is the tribal defence of our own. In Uruguay it’s a term of affection, John terry was obvious quoting he’s got black mates , The bloke doing the monkey gesture might be looking for his keys and every other incident ever. I’m not saying Everton fans are innocent either I’ve read here similar comments but if you allow a tribal football loyalty to lead you to excuse obviously racist actions You’re hardly helping.

It’s clear you disagree but think it’s hard to argue that people feel more free to say things now , more normalised. There is a reason the RS had those incidents increase after Suárez because racists felt they were preaching to the choir . People have heard others talk about immigration and foreigners and see it as a green light to let it out .

Anyone who has committed racist acts post Bexit/Trump were already racists and are always on the lookout for fresh excuses. If it wasn't Brexit/Trump it would of been somthing else. We can't stop having perfectly legitimate discussions on things like immigration because of how racists might abuse the situation. Let's start giving harsher punishments out to racists if we want to stamp it out or at least make a start in doing so. It's the lack of real punishments that gives them the green light to behave this way.

I didn’t say they weren’t mate , i said they feel the environment is more friendly for them to voice their opinions . I don’t think Brexit and trump have made people racist I think it’s meant racists feel it’s ok to say what they think .

i undertand mate but people like that will always find and excuse to say whats on their mind and generally feel it's ok to do so. If it wasn't Brexit/Trump they'd just latch onto somthing else as their excuse and be just as loud about it.

Tbf spurs have had a couple recently, a spurs fan literally threw a banana at a black player , and there’s the videos of that spurs fan being terrifyingly racist to Chinese people and Indians that’s been all over twitter recently

I think they might do but I think it’s a subconscious thing as well , it’s not a criticism of Brexit or the many people who believe in it but I would criticise some of the campaign . Some of that campaign enabled people and normalised their beliefs, it’s obviously just my opinion and you disagree mate .
