Whose fault - Howard, Osman -- or Martinez?

I'll go for Martinez. For not playing Barkley when he must have been chomping at the bit with the adrenalin still flowing in his veins after his winner at Swansea. I can never understand why you would weaken a team just because at some time in the future a player might be tired. If a player is tired that's the time to leave him out, not before. It was obvious from the first 20 minutes that we would miss his forward runs that commit defenders and so create space for others.

As for the other two clowns, it's a close call. Anyone can cock up but Howard made two bad mistakes, not just in playing the ball to Osman and putting him under pressure but then bringing down the attacker. Bad enough to concede and go a goal down -- to have us down to 10 men is a nightmare. Howard should have made sure in trying to retrieve the situation that he didn't make things worse instead.

Osmans fault. If he didn't make that mistake and we went on to win then it would have been deemed the correct decision but hindsight is debate changer.

This thread is way too RAWK. I don't blame Bobby for not staring Ross. He's young, he's playing a lot, and if you are going to rest him for a game, then a home game against the bottom club is probably the best one to do it in. Osman is not exactly a joker either. So, it's not Bobby's fault. Osman called for the pass but f*cked it up. Howard should have seen the player coming and not passed it. Then Howard went with his feet and not his hands. Overall, bad play from both Osman and Howard, but, get over it and let's smash S'ton

The manager can't be blamed for player errors. He has to trust his squad that they could all do an effective job if and when called upon. It was Osman's fault, for doing what all professional footballers should be capable of doing, controlling the ball. I like Osman but I've lost count of how many times I've seen him falling over on the pitch or failing in his concentration when about to trap the ball. He needs new boots with better studs.

Ultimately it is Martinez's fault. He is the boss, therefore he gets the blame when it goes horribly wrong, likewise he gets the plaudits when things go swimmingly.

As for individual fault, I think it could be split evenly between Howard and Osman. But get over it, the players are all human and can't be expected to make the right decision every single time, and likewise, we can't be expected to win every single game. It was also inevitable that we would lose our home record for 2013 to the bottom club in the division.

Hierarchy of blame:

1 Martinez for playing Osman
2 Osman for putting his GK in a world of trouble
2 Howard for thinking Osman was capable of doing anything other than what he did.

Pretty fair summation, I think.

The manager doesn't take the blame. He takes responsibility. He lives and dies by the decisions he makes. He can't be blamed if Osman can't trap a ball from a 12 yard pass from his goalkeeper. He takes responsibility for the 90 minute performance because he enact change and strategy. And all human beings, footballers included, are prone to error.
