It doesn't really matter how much we spend on strikers, we would still get battered away from home against the top teams. Look at United, they spent a fortune on strikers but teams still cut through them like a knife through butter.
The thing is, Arsenal always had a crap defence, but in the Fabregas era that didn't matter because we retained a lot of possession. You can play with a crap defence if your opponent only sees the ball around 30% of the time. But after Fabregas left, we struggled badly against top teams, because we can't defend and we also can't keep the ball, it's as simple as that. We need to replace our midfield options to stand any chance of another PL.
Chelsea > City > Arsenal > Whoever decides to stop throwing points away first.

The increase in domestic money compared with Champions League money is making the league more competitive this season.
A few years ago the extra £30M from Uefa was massive for the top 4. Now that £30M is relatively less. Still significant, but maybe less so. The Sky money is so large now that the Uefa money is not as decisive. Maybe the rich clubs will use sponsorship to pull away again, so the exposure of playing Champions League is still vital, but for sure the lesser teams have far more talent than before.
Nearly all teams have very skillful players that can hurt you. The approach of QPR at Old Trafford is the exception rather than the rule these days.
4th? Probably Arsenal

this is why i continually think wenger is holding arsenal back - he fails to address the same problems season after season, possibly through stubborness because the media keep pointing out these things to him.

I couldn't even sleep after Deulofeu equalized last time, that was a shocking goal to concede I could actually see the goal coming. When Barkley picked up the ball, I just kept shouting TAKE HIM OUT, TAKE HIM OUT!!!1 If we had someone like Thiago Motta he wouldn't hesitate, Barkley would be brought down, take the yellow card for the team and get the 3 points. But we have the SPINELESS Arteta and Flamini in midfield. It just gets the worse the more I look at the goal:
