Graeme Sharp saw it that he was greedy and if he scored that was his job done, wasnt interested in the team more about himself.

I think that quote alone is likely the main reason then, as Sharpy was (rightly) a fan favourite so his word would've been gospel.

Personally I saw it differently on the pitch, and I reckon Cottee probably did too.

Different era I guess. For a short guy up front it was tough to get involved in the build up as it was much more direct, so he was maybe more limited to finishing moves rather than helping construct them? I accept I'm blatantly sticking up for the little guy like ;)
