What the heck do we care?

Seem to be a lot of threads at the moment complaining about the media not giving us enough respect, or not including us in the canon of so called big clubs.

As the song goes

and if, you know, your history....

...what the heck do we care?

We're Everton, and I know full well what we are. I don't need that affirming by anyone else.

What you say is correct. A recent (BT Sports?) thread touched on this and I was referred to as a "moaning Minnie" by some RAWKish sounding plonker for articulating the exact same sentiment you have expressed.

We are Everton...and we do things in an Everton way.

End of.

Because it effects the way other teams treat us

Look at the Baines bid for proof of that, or the Lescott situation a way back

As long as we're seen as not one of the "big" sides, our club will always be put under undue pressure to sell our greatest assets

At which point? The point where we ended up getting a record amount for Lescott? Or the point where we didn't allow Baines to go.

Clubs don't treat Everton differently because they perceive them as a small club, they treat them in the same way they do all other clubs - try and sign their best players as cheaply as possible.
Arsenal's 40mil and 1 penny bid for Suarez, Jon Obi Mikel to Chelsea to name just two.

Our Media Image will affect:

Sponsorship
Merchandising
Supporter base
Player acquisition
TV Rights

If we aren't getting talked about as Top 4 contenders etc - we will in all likelihood get less of everything.

That is why the likes of RS/Arsenal can spray money about every window because they bring in more of the above from all around the world. They have a higher profile image.

I live in Australia - whenever they talk about the results over here - ManU/Liverpool/Arsenal will get most of the coverage followed by City/Chelsea - the rest get mentioned either as the opponents of the prior ones or just the results of the games.

Of course we need to justify being talked about by the performances on the pitch - but when we are doing well why shouldn't we want the same coverage as them.

Yeah, taken out of context slightly, and being honest it would be naive to not care about the "media" we can't afford to be left behind like we were in the 90s. I say big up the media stuff as much as possible and we might just slip onto the sky bandwagon like chelsea a while back, and like what spurs and city are doing now.

I don't....

Once we we win something or achieve a CL place, and are then not mentioned maybe i will rethink but as it stands we'v done nothing over the last few years to suggest we should be talked about as anything other than a top 8 side.

We keep going in the right direction and we will soon be impossible to ignore. Be carefull you know what English media/mentality is like, they love to build someone up to knock them down!
Nail on head. We've had a good start to the season but let's go and achieve something first before we start whining about being overlooked by the media

If we start winning things or even splashing the cash they might start to take notice, rather be low key myself.

There's a thing which annoys me. The fact that Spurs always seem to be mentioned as a big club without winning anything.

TO further show how their is a difference - a few years ago Everton did a Aussie tour - barely rated a mention.

I didn't get to a game unfortunately but perhaps someone who did could correct but I imagine that it was played in front of reasonable but not overflowing crowds (20-40k in stadia which can hold quite a few more)

Liverpool did a tour last preseason. Much higher coverage - multiple interviews with local coaches/players about how fantastic it was to have a side such as Liverpool touring and how magical it was to have a massive stadium filled with people (95000 was the crowd) singing YNWA.

People complain about the board not making enough money from the commercial side but want us not to care about media coverage. In this day and age they go hand in hand. The media coverage helps to generate the commercial revenue
