Couldn't understand why Naismith took one of the early pens.

You choose the players who want to take the penalties. Surely you have a better chance of being successful if you choose players who are confident and want to take them at the time compared to players might be 'technically more gifted at penalties' who lack confidence.
.
I mean cmon, they are all professional footballers and should be able to have a decent attempt at a penalty really

That we can dominate teams with 10 men shows just how poorly we've been playing (and been managed) this season. Criminal that we fell so early in the two domestic cups. Even worse that we're concerned (or should be) about relegation.

Agree to a point, footballers should be able to take a pen, but Naismith IMO, looked far from confident. Me and my lad both looked at each other and said that he didn't look confident, that was shown by a piss poor pen.By the way I'm not having a dig at Naismith because he showed balls to step up. Also, you normally start with all your best pen takers, so why was Baines taking his pen 4th.

I hate it like when we have to write seasons off around Christmas.

Ain't no way we're winning the Europa League, so it's a fight to finish in the top half this season and that's it.

How can he be done for time wasting when the time is up?
Probably for trying to put off the player, but seeing as Adrian was doing it too it was fair to not book Joel for basically doing nothing.

One thing I would have liked from him was a bit more movement on the line. Say what you want, but that puts off the penalty taker a lot more than just standing there and waiting to pick your side to dive to. Jump up and down, move your arms, shuffle slightly from side to side... anything to put some doubt into the taker's mind and increase the chance of them fluffing it.

It's already nerve-wracking enough taking a pen, so it makes no sense to me to just stand there and let them get on with it all calmly.

So we are not weak in the middle, we are not leaking goals and Lukaku is doing okay up front on his own?

We've conceded 3 goals in the last 300 minutes of football, an hour of that was playing with 10 men. Besic has been one of our best players this last month or so, who happens to play in the middle. Barry hasn't been as good as last season, but the last few games he has definitely improved, anyone who says otherwise has an agenda against him quite frankly. Lukaku has scored 9 goals (I think) so far, so he's on course to bag just under 20 this season. Not bad is it?

I'm not saying we've not struggled this season, but we're on an upturn of form. People have a tendency to go extreme and say we're either awful or brilliant. We're somewhere in between at the moment. We just need to turn these better performances into wins.

I was basing my opinion on this season not the last couple of games, all of which i attended so have first hand knowledge.

Over the season we have been weak in the middle, we have leaked more goals now than all last seaon, and if Lukaku had support his nine would be more, look at the stats for players that have scored more goals and check what support they receive????

I know we all have our opinion but giving half baked stats does not support the season long argument, how many wins in the last dozen games? How may clean sheets in the last dozen games, how many ridiculous substitutions in the last dozen games?

We could both go on and on for our differing opinions, unfortunately out of two cups at basically the first hurdle and struggling massively in the league does not lie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

An upturn of form in your opinion is two draws and a loss in 3 games?

How can he be done for time wasting when the time is up?

It would've been for unsportsmanlike behavior.
It's happened once before... where a goalie punched the other goalie and was sent off for it.

To answer the original question.. no, we couldn't have used a sub at that stage. The only players that can be involved in the penalty shootout are those that finish the game. Jags would've went in goals.
