We're not really shooting outside the box much

I think to be fair Ross has been looking to shoot but gets closed down so quickly on the edge of the area that even if he shifts it and beats a man there's someone else there.

He's just looking for the right chance to shoot (ala Norwich) rather than shooting for the sake of it (ala West Ham).

We've never really shot form distance much in recent times, could be tactics but there's no point of your players aren't any good at it.

not having a go at the lad, but sometimes he does seem to open up a great shooting opportunity all by himself and then will either take an extra touch to set up a better chance or dribble too much. Then when a worse opportunity arises like when he's off balance, he takes the shot on :s

in a couple of years he will have it mastered though. can't wait for some lukaku long range screamers with that leftie of his

As good as Ross is, it's too frustrating to watch him shape up to pull the trigger from outside the box, only to take an extra touch. By this point the chance has gone.

Mikey, I like you, you are sound but do you know how hard it is to shoot outside the box? You have literally a second to make that decision, create space and pull your foot back. It's not easy as it looks from our point of view. When there's players all around you and in front of you, you don't get the chance as often that's why we work it out wide it look for a nice pass/through ball etc. Do you know how hard it is to score from 20+ yards? The players that have done it regularly are extremely gifted. A player like Beckham doesn't come around often, neither does Scholes, Ronaldo or Bale.

Once you take a touch on that ball, there will be someone within yards of you, it's not easy as it looks.

I've been reading The Numbers Game and just read the chapter on Martinez at Wigan. The author notes that his Wigan consistently scored a high percentage of goals from long-distance (about 4x the Prem average). The premise is that this is one of the areas Martinez utilized to counter the financial constraints of Wigan.
