This is my first post from my (forced upgrade as my old cpu and motherboard died horrible deaths) brand spanky new PC. Got myself one of those new-fangled Intel Core 2 Duo processors that utilize the new 45 nano-meter die's. (These are from the plant I almost got a job at!). Smaller die's mean less power which mean less 'trons creating heat so the can squeeze waaaay more speed out of them.

So really, this post is for the computer geeks (like myself) to ooo and ahhh at.

I got the E8400 (Wolfdale core) that runs at 3.0Ghz, that I currently have OC'ed to 4.2Ghz on AIR!!! An Arctic Freezer 7 heat sink & fan, 2 Gig of Corsair XMS DDR 6400 ram at 5-5-5-15 timings and a funky colourful Giga-byte S-series mobo.

I previously had an AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ that ran at 2.2Ghz and did not OC well. This E8400 pisses all over it. ALL OVER IT! Night and day difference.

This is also my first post from my new OS, Windows Vista Home Premium. When I reinstalled my *ahem* copy of Windows (XP Professional and Server 2003) they both popped up the old "This copy of Windows is a counterfeit" blah-de-blah-de-blah. So I thought I would go legit for a change :P and get Vista in light of the first service pack is just around the corner to fix all the problems. I have heard all the horror stories of Vista, but I have also heard lots of good things, and so far I have had NO issues at all, with any of my old software or hardware. None. I am impressed.

To showcase my wicked PC, it goes from hitting the power switch to Vista ready to roll in 22 seconds, gets the new Windows Index score of 5.9 (out of 5.9), drops just under 20,000 in 3dMark (I still have a 7 series GeForce running the graphics).

The best part........the price! All this crap comes in at the same price as the gear it replaces! The E8400 is slightly more expensive than the chips it is replacing, the E6X50 chips (and gets ~10% improvements when running at the same clock speeds), the mobo was dirt cheap, the RAM was dirt sheap and I got Vista for CHEAP as I bought a system builder OEM pack! Beautiful stuff.

NOw all I need to do is get into World of Warcraft and I could be an Uber-geek  (not gonna happen)

vista eh? Can you change the 'always ask me for authentication' function. I got it on my laptop and its really annoying.

Can anyone remember sinclair spectrum 48k computers? Some games would take two days to load and could still crash at the last second- and what was with that screeching noises???!

Oh by the way Dylan- I have no idea what you are talking about- just saw the word PC a couple of times.

Well, considering all of my technical training is to do with electronics and electricity and I almost got a job with Intel last year, and the fact that I like it all, I think that is good enough reason to know about it.

Think about it like this. The old processors like a PIII or P4 is like Vinnie Jones, big, blunt, loud and no finesse. My AMD chip is like Duncan Ferguson, big, strong and has some skill then these new 45nm chips are the Mikel Arteta/Cesc Fabregas, Lionel Messi's of the world. Small, quick, efficient, smart.

Does the football analogy help?

i referenced the final scene from 'fight club'

anyway, when you treating yourself to a geforce 8800GT?

Soon Suits, soon. The new 8800GT chips are allowing them to outperform the older 8800GTS's. WHich is quite a feat considering here they are still $100 cheaper per card.

lol - the joys of a new pc :D

The one I bought recently is nowhere near as good as that*, but you still get the same "new stuff, yay!" feeling (y)

You mention overclocking -I have tried looking into this but am met with a wall of jargon. I know that my chip will take o/c'ing up to 3GHz, so I wanted to upgrade it to 2.66GHx (from 1.86), as I'll be keeping the same cooling set up for now.

I have heard about changing the FMB speed in BIOS from 200 to 333 MHZ, is that all I have to do?? if not, can you give me baby steps or point me in the direction of a "guide for dummies"?

cheers

dave

p.s. Mine gets a 3.5 on the windows index experience base score thing.
