We are considering signing Ron Vlaar

Well thought of until that horrific injury , big move on the cards until that.
Leader , Captain , very good in the air....good player. If we could keep him fit would be a good acquisition.

Would be a non-Martinez signing if ever there was one....very slow and no "ball player"

Interesting to see the echo linking us with a few free transfers, the more interesting names being:

Sam Byram (leeds right back) still dont understand how he never got any England youth caps?!?!?!

Andrija Zivkovic (Partizan winger) rated as Serbia's future superstar.

Alessakdr Kokorin (Dinamo Moscow) possible backup to Lukaku.

Andre Carrillo (sporting) south american winger

Charlie Austin (QPR) possible backup to Lukaku and scored 7 in 12 this season.

If it was me, i'd be all over Zivkovic and Austin. Not sure how Byram has been doing recently but as above, odd he hasnt been capped at youth level.

Certainly wouldnt be in for Vlaar.

He would be a great signing, but I'd be worried that it would signal Stones departure. The conspiracist in me wonders whether Vlaar was coming (and Stones going), until he got crocked.

Don't see the fit myself. Martinez is building a team based on players who are comfortable on the ball and who can pass it about. Vlaar isn't that type of player. At best he would be third choice, if Funes Mori develops he would be 4th choice and he would be quickly overtaken by some of our younger players.
He is 30, he needs to play not sit on the bench or not even get a space on the bench. He will also be looking a good wage, money which could be better spent on a player in a position which we need.
I have no doubt he will do well for somebody but that somebody is not us.

Pennington is also injured, we have a decent amount of defenders (although lacking in experience) but they all seem to be in the physioroom!

Holgate will probably make the bench again versus Villa.

Besic/Barry/Gibson/Hibbert have all played as a CB but would prefer Vlaar to all of them in that position for any length of time.

For a side vulnerable to crosses that does not bode well.

I guess it all depends on the injury to Jagielka, but it's a no brainer to me to offer Vlaar a deal until the end of the season.

Sure you can find an exception or two, but it's not that the general tendency shows clubs pay as much for defenders as they do for attackers. City have done so in the last years, but that's the result of poor scouting and a willingness to pay gargantuan fees for centre halves, but if we don't want to sell him to a domestic rival, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich etc. usually don't splash out the big money on defenders.
Barcelona spent €25 million on a backup central defender. If that's not splashing out big money, I don't know what is.

Strikes me as the sort of experienced player who'll be offered an outrageous lump by a relegation scrapper until the end of the season. Vlaar with one knee would be more effective than Distin based on the bits I've seen on MOTD
