My hero and the reason I support Everton. Was lucky enough to watch him many times for club and for country. He was just amazing. I don't know many keepers who lose 7-1 in a game and are named MOTM. I have a match worn shirt of his and it is my most treasured possession

PS he was the best and if you were too young to see him, try and see if you can find clips from Sky One's The Match, circa around 2005 where even heavily overweight and in his mid 40's he was still making saves that defied belief.

I was there at the game (was in Uni at the time) and he rolled back the years, I was worried going in that he'd be embarrassing

Southall was the best goalkeeper I've ever seen live (not just for us, I mean any goalkeeper I saw live, period) and I've been going to the match for over 30 years.

I usually say 'people are entitled to their own opinion', but really, anyone criticising Southall is talking utter rubbish, either through ignorance or is on a wind up.

He's a major league Everton club legend. There should be a statue of him at the club (greatest goalkeeper in our history), and the only reason he's not as visible at club functions or works as a club ambassador like Sharp is because he's very outspoken, doesn't get on with Kenwright, and also (very commendably) has his own life outside football as a teacher of troubled youths and also because he's based down south.

I've not read the 17 pages, I don't need to, if you saw him play then you know the answer, if you didnt then i guess it's because you're too young, and likewise you should still know the answer if you've been brought up as a blue. I never saw Dixie play but I know he was great.
Legends don't need to have their ability discussed on a forum.

Apples and oranges! Did they play the same teams in qualifying, taking into account form of other teams and luck? 1 player does not make a team and Wales lack of success was not down to Southall who over the years helped keep them in games.
