The rivalry in the eighties was very different to now. I did go to the cup finals on mixed coaches and Merseyside was sung by both sets of fans.
The Emlyn Hughes comments were damaging but was a one off mistake from a bell who apologised.
In my opinion benitez with his small club comments has a lot to answer for. All there other managers have been respectful to us in my lifetime

Emlyn Hughes ,for me,the reason of my eternal hatred towards them.

Couldn't agree more. I went along with my lfc mates and when, not only him, but Thompson, 'Liverpool are magic, Everton are tragic' there were ructions in the crowd. From that day onwards many, many Evertonians dislike of them grew. Before that there was grudging acceptance of their achievements. The seeds were sown that night in 1977 in the city centre, and got worse in the 1980s because they hated us taking their crown away from them and being an equal. The 1971 semi final at Old Trafford saw mixed groups travelling together and drinking in the same pubs as they did before most derbies.

Also the day they won the European Cup I for one was not happy but many Evertonians turned out in scarfs to welcome them home then Emlyn Hughes decides to encourage everyone to sing Everton are Tragic.....not his best moment.

Wasn't just him but also Thompson.

Saturday nights in town after the derby in the 80s were great
No trouble very noisy
And yes I sung Merseyside Merseyside like everyone else although our red brethren wanted 100,000 scousers to sing that munich song (they'll deny it of course )
When I was at school there was never trouble between red and blue
I can recall everyone rooting for them in the facup final v Newcastle
But when we started becoming their equal they never liked it
Heysel
Hillsborough
Imagine if it was us

After the Andy King Derby I remember groups of Liverpool fans frothing at the mouth and snarling at any Evertonian within range. Never seen such childish bitter supporters like that.....suppose it didn't help pointing and laughing at them. It was our first derby win for like 7 years and they couldn't handle it......and we are the supposedly bitter ones.
Likewise when we won the Cup Winners cup.
After watching the game a few of us went to the pub for a few drinks. We were naturally boisterous and could hardly contain ourselves when one of those rats told us to be quiet. I actually tried to engage in conversation with him to ascertain his mindset as to his reaction. I won the day by buying him pint which he looked at then departed without touching it. And they call US bitter.
My arse!

We have only them to dislike, local rivallary, they hate anyone who achieves success, they hated Forest and Clough, they hate United,City,Chelsea,Arsenal, they hated Ferguson, hate Jose, hate Wenger why? Because they are teams and managers that take the limelight away from the rs,they try to stay relevant by making out games against the bug spenders are all important, huge clashes when really its just another game to them teams,in short they are self entitled bellends who crave attention
If Everton and Liverpool were people, Everton would be Liverpool's ugly older sister and Liverpool would be an annoying little brat who's all 'ME ME ME' and can't stand it whenever anyone else gets attention.

Nice article by the way.
The bit about who started the "Merseyside " chant I would dispute though.
Admittedly I was in the Everton end, but would lay odds on it coming from our end.
Just my thoughts!

And for a group of people who call US bitter, Liverpool fans are some of the most immature, bitter, obnoxious fans I've ever met. As I said elsewhere, I know one who was incredibly snooty throughout 13-14, and then disappeared temporarily off Facebook when City won the league. He doesn't shut up about us, Man United or Chelsea but when our fans talk about Liverpool, we're 'obsessed'. Even neutrals hate them. I've got a mate who's a Forest fan and he can't stand Liverpool, and my stepdad and stepbrother - both of whom are Chelsea fans - hate them as well.

Plus they're always coming on Everton posts on Facebook and Twitter to comment. It's sad. They should worry about their own team. I don't post on any Liverpool-related places.
