2025/26 Vitalii Mykolenko

Watching us yesterday first half reminded me of those celebrity sport aid games. Shocking we have so many players who can't do the absolute basics a terrible indictment of our current recruitment teams short comings. Watching Sunderland on the other hand who have basically bought a whole team had plenty of pacy skilled players on show. Just can't get my head round it.
It's utterly baffling why the club and all of its scouts, directors of football, and manager have consistently neglected the idea of injecting any form of pace into our squad over about a decade.

Probably the last quick player we had was the crap desperation signing of Demarai Gray whenever that was.

Why we persist with this tactic of attacking and then putting the foot on the ball to allow the defending side to get all their players back is mystifying.

Apart from about two per season, we don't play through balls; apart from last week when we scored the two consolation headers against Brentford, I have no idea when we last scored a header from a cross — must have been DCL over a year ago; we do not have the ability to hit teams on the break other than again once or twice a season — look at how many pathetic attempts of 'breaks' we've seen fall apart this season despite being 4 on 1 or something; we don't have any clue how to attack from corners either.

Like you say, the basics are woefully lacking too, for example in the cases of Mykolenko and O'Brien when they receive the ball in loads of space, their automatic initial thought is usually to move it backwards to one of the centre halves — probably the highlight of the season for me last week when Jake's negativity was jeered by the entire stadium.

I still maintain if our football philosophy doesn't change we will be back in relegation scraps sooner rather than later. We set up for failure every game.

I thought Sunderland looked excellent on the ball in comparison to us. For an away side they played it round with real confidence.

We just look so rigid in possession. Mykolenko and O'Brien being two of the worst culprits but you could also throw Tarkowski in there as well. It just kills our attacking play from the off.

I think for that to happen we will need a complete re-think of the academy, and also get rid of Moyes and most if not all of his backroom team. I had hoped the new owners would bring real change, but yet to see anything at all really apart from luckily being clear of relegation zone but now quickly getting worse on a weekly basis.

I understand the need to pass the ball between players to 'open up' or move the opposition around, but the number of times we pathetically play the ball between the defenders without any confidence or more likely ability to play a cute/killer pass forwards.

Pickford to Tarkowski, to Mykolenko, to Tarkowski, to Keane, to Tarkowski, to Mykolenko and perhaps then to Grealish 5 yards into the opposition half 60 seconds later, 99% of the time then coming to nothing as Mykolenko is behind him, nobody is moving inside of him and there's no point giving it to the strikers.

I missed that. Didnt see him do a whole lot wrong. Villa seemed to try and play pretty narrow a lot of the time which suited us.
got caught twice ball watching, once was isolated back post for their much bigger midfielder and then again got caught in no mans land stepping up and left acres for I think buendia or tielemans to exploit in behind for free.

Aye he loses his man a lot. Especially if there’s space behind him. I must’ve been distracted posting interesting football observations in the match thread when that happened.
As a whole we looked pretty well balanced at the back for the first time in a while.

I think the faith Tarkowski has in JOB means he can babysit the FB's easier. That cover and orchestrating goes a long way.
