From my point of view, the only way this would happen is because of some personal connection and mutual respect between him and Koeman. It's not impossible given that Koeman was one of the greatest CBs and a Dutchman to boot.
Still not likely , but assuming the rumours contain some truth, why would we attempt a bid if we didn't think we had some chance? After all, there are other quality CBs out there.
We shall see.

I don't know with this market mate.
My explanation is that almost every team that wants to achieve something has one beast of a centre half that they build their defense around for a period of 5+ years. Probably VVD has been identified as such by our management and they want him so badly as to be willing to give such money.
As for Atletico centre backs - I know who I want. The boy is an absolute beast and if we can get him for like 30-35 mln , I will be over the moon.

You can find good CBs for little money and a good scouting dept.
