Viewpoint on Modern Refereeing (Sports in General)

Diving should be straight red, the 4th official should be able to view incidents while the game is played to avoid interruption. Game carries on and if , even 10 moms later the 4th official has seen enough replays to come to a conclusion that a player has dived, next break in play , radio the red and the player walks.

Same with dirty challenges and if a player has been sent off and replays show that he shouldn’t, the team should be allowed to come back on. Or even any red card must be reviewed by the 4th official and both him and the red need to agree on it .

Decisions need to be quick. If the player dives, the game runs for 5 minutes and then he is sent off, what happens if he has scored a goal in that time? Or provided an assist?

I don't want VAR but I'd love refs to be miked up and explain decisions like they do in rugby. VAR just slows the game down and is still not accurate enough to be 100 percent.

I'd also clamp down on dissent, refs make mistakes, but that is part and parcel of the game.

I think the bigger problem is the blatant cheating that goes on almost constantly. You know it’s not your throw in, but you try and claim it anyway. You give away a free kick, then kick the ball a couple of yards away to stop a quick free kick, standing right over a free kick instead of retreating 10 yards, pretending to be injured to waste time etc etc etc.

All teams do these things, and they are all cheating. The players need to take the responsibility to play fair, then maybe the ref will have a much easier time.

So your solution is essentially to suspend stars more, and for 3 games... which is ridiculous. Give more yellows and in turn more suspensions. More automatic reds, which are more suspensions. Just suspensions, suspensions, suspensions.

To stop the clock and make games 3+ hours.

To get rid of the champions league, and minimize instead of maximize match ups between inter league big clubs and stars. Which if your other rules were passed, probably wouldn't matter anyways since half of them would be in the midst of serving their 3 game ban. Or one for an automatic red, or accumulated yellows. Plus, instead of watching teams park the bus for 1 and a half hours, we can watch them do it for 3 hours.

Congrats, you found a way to completely ruin the game and make it look perfect as is.
If your star players are constantly getting banned for cheating, you don’t think their behaviour will change?

Well, if players kept getting suspended they wouldn't keep cheating and cheating like they do. Players like salah are driving for pens two or three times a game because they don't get punished and they usually get the decision in the end to help win the game.

A game wouldn't be 3 hours long if you stopped the clock. Keepers continually take an age over goal kicks etc because they know it's running down the clock. It would imo make the game actually end quicker.

Why do you keep talking about stars? Why does it matter if its the best players cheating or the crap ones? Eradicating cheating will see the stats stand out more if they're willing to stand up and be counted instead of trying to fool the ref.

All ideas I agree with, though I'm less fond of the idea of stopping the clock.
The main issue is the obscene amount of money in the game so what you suggest will not happen. All your proposals make it much, much harder for bent refs to pass off their decisions as simple mistakes. The game is utterly bent, it's why Fifa held away from var for so long.

Get rid of sky et al, (persuade people not to subscribe) reduce the cash, reduce the 'obligation' to cheat to make sure the perceived 'top drawer' same old clubs are always there and we just might have a sport on our hands again.

At that point my interest in pro football might return.

Yeah I know it's all about money and that's sad, like you, my interest in football has gone. I'll watch Everton, Swansea and Wales and that's about it. I just think the standard is so utterly poor now because of the wages.

I would like to see wage caps brought in. So no footballer earns more than say 100k a week and they can then make loads of money on bonuses etc. Instead

There could be pricing tiers of 90-100k, 80-90k etc and teams can only have five players in the top tier, five in the next etc. I think If we saw something like that it'd be a much leveller playing field and would be more interesting.

Players would be getting their money on merits then if it was bonus based and we'd see an increase in performance.

Nice idea in theory, but how exactly do you determine if someone has taken a dive? I acknowledge often it is blatant but in other situations where there was some contact, how do you determine whether it was sufficient to cause the player to go over?

zero chance mate. too much money

for mine I would get rid of all European club comps bar the CL. There isn't an good reason why the 6th best team in a season needs to be playing for another trophy.

Diving is all subjective yes, but so are bands handed out for bad tackles etc, that's the way of the sport. Basically former players who have played the game will have a much better grasp of what it is and what isn't. They may get some wrong but a panel of three you'd hope would get the majority right. Right now, they're getting pretty much nothing right.

I've always liked the way American football does things, with the challenge system, if the coach does not agree with a decision he has a flag to throw onto the pitch and the decision has to be reviewed, if it turns out that the coach is right the call is overturned and they get their flag back I think they start with 2 flags, if the coach is wrong and its determined that the call was correct then the ref keeps the flag and the team is charged a time-out which is a great punishment, obviously they don't have time outs in real football so how to punish a wrongley thrown flag is up for debate maybe have to take a player off for 5 minutes.

I like that idea a lot and could see it working well and fairly.
However id have the absolute ceiling at 10k a week, which is an astoundingly generous amount for playing a hobby, and more than anybody needs.

The European courts would probably be used to stop you though, impinging earnings etc. Bunch of fools.

I might be wrong but I think that was because clattenberg was the designated English ref and he packed in, so they weren’t allowed to replace him.
Clattenberg refs like he is on Stars In Your Eyes though, im glad he was not there he makes everything about him, standard of refs in this country is so poor as we have already seen to our cost so far this season.
