VAR

Also I'm not arsed that it's them that have finally said something. If it brings transparency to decisions, frequently released audio and better rules and explanations then it benefits us all. Put aside the rivalries and what aboutisms and demand better. Football being so tribal is part of the reason they standards of officiating are in the bin.

This is elite level sports lads not a load of balding fat lads running around on a Sunday morning still half pissed.

Listening to that audio and it's pretty clear why so many bad decisions are made. It's an absolute mess of a process that isn't fit for purpose for the supposed best league in the world. It's pure schoolboy stuff, all this ''it takes too much time'' is a load of nonsense as well, prioritise making the right decision above all else no matter how long it takes.

It's not good enough to excuse mistakes on being human or having a lapse of concentration. These are very well paid supposed professionals in a very specific job and they are failing. In any other line of work you are sacked for being terrible.

Yes I'm still bitter about Keane's goal against Fulham.
The onfield officials don’t listen to the var audio & vice Versa.

It’s only certain communications that are transmitted between the two, they should make that clear really because it’s one of the reasons the mistake was made.

The premiere league had the option at the beginning of the season, of introducing the offside system from the world Cup. I want to say it used some sort of AI to assist the decision but might be wrong. Anyway I thought it was probably the best use is VAR i've seen. Premiere league clubs voted against it, so we've all got ourselves to blame. Although it works be interesting if it was a majority vote, to see who voted against it.

In an ideal world I agree, but the problem with the egos on these refs is that if the system was that the referee could only request help they probably wouldn't have the humility to admit they are unsure.

For me it's maybe time to get the automated offside system on board and for the rest maybe have a limited number of NFL style coaches challenges or something but that audio shows how absurd and chaotic it is to have 7 officials involved in each and every decision.

I don't think it would. The refs have always asked for help and now have more rules in place to deter player behaviour to goad them. They're currently losing control of games because they think VAR will bail them out. Giving them the power to review something if they want would then be a choice rather than demeaning them.

There is and always will be different interpretations of the rules. One person will say foul, the other a dive or "soft" for example. That happens up and down the country. But you're not in charge. The ref is and should be. So what he says is final.

Anything else like such as challenges etc still adds to something that can be so simple.

It's not surprising since VAR has come in the level of officiating has dropped massively and they've been binned off from major tournaments.

I remember you'd get probably about 5-6 awful errors by refs a season pre-var. Now it's one a week.

It sucks the life out of games though.

Took 3 mins to see if they could find anything to rule Dom's goal off on the weekend.

Killed the momentum, killed the atmosphere. Adding on time doesn't help bring that back.

Yeah, if the refs did use the system properly that would be much better, we need fewer people involved that’s for sure. The only guy they need off site is the replay technician, and it’s so telling that in that clip he is the only guy who knows what is actually going on.

And it's the pace and atmosphere of the games.

You've got 40-50k fans, players shouting, then the ref has 3 people in his ear and has to make an split second decision to stop a game, play on...wait.

It's a farce. No wonder they get loads wrong.

I agree it does, but we either use the technology properly or not at all otherwise what is the point? We got sold this implementation of VAR on the basis of clear and obvious but instead it's been turned in to officials forensically searching multiple different phases of play for centimetres of difference.

The whole current system needs binning and a meeting between the clubs needs to take place to hammer out and agree a new implementation of VAR with common sense being at the forefront. We've got ourselves in to a situation where questioning decisions and refs can lead to suspensions and fines.......when exactly did we give these little scrotes so much power and why?

I've always felt the issue was that it was given a blanket approach to review everything. Should never have been that way. Should have been what do the refs find difficult and how can it help. Get that right and look to add.

Instead what you get is "ah mate, you've ballsed that one up/missed it, have a look and change it"

I mean...get the offsides right first ffs.
