VAN EYES RETURN

Andy van der Meyde wants to stay with Everton and get his career back on track.

The Dutchman has seen his career at Goodison hampered by injuries and disciplinary problems since joining in 2005.

But he was with the Blues in Switzerland last week and played in the 1-0 defeat to FC Sion on Saturday afternoon.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, van der Meyde said: “I need to stay as fit as I can and not get any more injuries.

“If I can do that, then maybe everything will be all right. I want to do my best.

“It’s difficult but I hope I can still be important for Everton. I don’t want to get too carried away. There is still lots of work to be done and there is big challenge ahead.”

Media reports have linked the winger with a move away from Everton, but the 28-year-old wants to stay and attempt to prove himself.

“I’m not looking to go anywhere else," he declared. "I want to stay with Everton and that has always been the case.

“I have had difficult times but I want to give something back to everyone.

“I also want to do it for myself. It has been too long since I played well. I’ve been thinking about pre-season all summer and now I just want to get myself right.”

Indeed, the experience of playing 90 minutes on Saturday meant a lot to van der Meyde.

“It was so nice to be playing again,” he added. “It is such a long time since I have had that feeling. I played 90 minutes, we lost but the result doesn’t count.

“Right now things are all about getting yourself into good physical shape and we had a really good week.

“If you put the hard work in now, you will get things back later on. Pre-season isn’t nice for footballers but you have to get on with it and do your very best.”

Forgot he was still here to be honest. Surely he was only playing as we didn't have anyone else

Jesus, another "new signing" for us, I suppose.

To be fair to the guy, he showed some flashes of being a really good footballer. It would be nice if he could maintain his attitude. A healthy and determined Andy would be a great "new" addition to the first team.

It would be great to see him pull something out of the bag and give something back to the club after living off its tit for 3 years.

I cant help but think that he'll always be off the pace in todays footballing climate. Unless those 3 years have made him into a machine.

I have always had mixed emotions about Andy Van- on the one hand he has talent that others in our squad lack and on the other hand we have barely seen him show it.

Hes had bad injuries, been burgled, suffered depression and had a very sick daughter- he was disciplined for going out on the lash after a curfew and lets be honest if all that happened to one of us we would probably do the same.

Fact is he is still on our books, if things were that bad behind the scenes I am 100% certain Moyes would have got rid of him a while ago. By all the accounts the injuries are behind him- so lets now judge him for what he should be judged on- what he does or does not do on the pitch!

Well this year he's playing for his livelyhood if he does somehow manage to wriggle his way into the first team he'll have to prove he still has it as there aren't exactly clubs queuing around Goodison for him at the moment.

He's also got a sick daughter to provide for so hopefully it'll give him something to keep him determined and focused. 1 season without any headlines for the wrong reasons shouldn't be too much to ask for any professional footballer. Let's hope Brandy manages it.

I dont really care about his past, we're so low on numbers in midfield, even if he can shape up to be an average squad player its better than nothing.

He's certainly good enough, its just a case of if he can get anywhere near match fit, which I doubt very much given his record with us.

I reckon he'll have a stormer if DM wants to let him have a good run out this pre-season. I'd be made up for VDM to show us the potential i think we all know he has got.

Lets face it, you must have somethin good to get out the Ajax academy and play for Inter Milan. Come on Andy lad, prove all these critics wrong.

I'll raise my glass to AVM havin a stormer this season. No doubt he will to(y)

I think he'd be a useful squad player. If he gets himself in the right shape and don't see why he can't contribute. With the 7 subs he'd definatly be a good option from the bench.

I can't see him breaking into the first team though nor do I want him too. A squad player is the best he should be looking at.

I can defo see him as a first team regular by crimbo, he just needs that little arm around an DM to whisper a few sweet words in his ear.

5-8 goals and 10 assists from around 30games this season. (y)(y)

i wasnt a member this time last year but i could probably bet my bottom quid on us having a similar thread to this in the archives
