The horrible things you heard are mostly by people who decided it was crap when it was announced. Ignoring anything that would suggest otherwise.

Also, it didn't help that the studio is in charge of the trailers, not Shane Black, and the teaser and first trailer really didn't help things out.

I'm pretty sure studio execs were just the usual posh fools too dumb to study anything complex and went down the usual variation of a business degree and straight into a job as someone's posh son.
