Underrated 11

I've said this before. Anichebe has great physical presence, holds the ball well is an asset at set pieces. If he can work on his tackling and distribution he should seriously consider dropping back into a holding midfield role. He simply doesn't have what it takes to be a first or even second choice striker at this level. Although like Beatten he may find the lower standard of defending in the Championship better suits his game.

Almost forgot - Terry Darracott

Rooney was 16, Victor is 20.

It took Osman until he was 22-23 before being good enough for the first team.

Please read Toxteth's posts on Vic, he puts the points across much better than me.

EDIT - These ones in fact...

He's got time on his hands, lots of time to improve and work on his deciencies as a player. I'm confident he'll succeed here, he'll become a decent Premier League striker and a useful one.

Alot of fans are like that with young players, Villa fans are exactly the same with Agbonlahor. It's about giving them time and understanding that they are going to have there ups and downs as players, they are learning there trade.

What you also have to realise is Victor is a very late bloomer, he was about to be let go from the reserves and in a few months he developed immensely. He's definatly a player that needs time.

He has just turned 20 years old, he nowhere near the finished article.

About 20 of those 68 appearences have actually been starts. How I see it is as a 5th choice striker which he has been for the last two seasons he's chipped in with 5 goals a season, not bad at all.

He doesn't start week in week out, he's expected to come in every 10 games and he'e expected to play against experienced centre backs who are fitter and in better condition than him. It's not easy at all, especially not for someone who obviously struggles with fitness.

I don't see why people have an agenda against him, the lads still learning and he's going to have his ups and downs. He's never going to be amazing nor is he going to be a prollific goalscorer but he does have the potential to be a handful and a decent premier League striker.

Only starting watching footie since 03 so I cant get 11 in.

Marcus Bent - for only 750K he was tremendous holding the ball up for Cahill, Osman and Gravesen and banged in a few goals in as well. Unfortately his most important goal was taken away by Collina.

Osman

Pinnear may not be underrated by us but he's an underrated Prem player.

Valente

Surprised no one's mentioned Derek Mountfield. Scored 14 goals one season. That's almost as many as Andrew Johnson got in two seasons. Not bad for a defender.

The point you made was that Rooney wasn't starting week in week out, Wayne was still only then 16, I wouldnt expect Baxter to play week in week out at his age now.

Yes, because he isn't ready.

And neither is Vic yet. Players develop at different times, there's no set age when they will be ready for the first team every week.

tbh I'm tired of arguing with you, Toxteth Blue is talking a lot of sense in this thread, like I say, please read his posts as they're better than mine.

imo Victor is a good player to have in the squad right now and given a bit more time will develop into a solid striker. I don't want to say anything more on the matter, I've made my points. You clearly don't agree with me and that's fine, I don't have the time to argue any more.

bent - £450k

it was duncans header from an arteta corner that collina had orders to overrule.

It was never an argument anyway, difference in opinion but you don't seem to like anyone picking any faults with our own team, no offence.

Ive not seen the game today, and i'll stick by my statement Anichebe will never be a brilliant premier league striker, but i heard he played well on the wing, (RW was it?) maybe its a position he could develop in, his passing was impressive apparently and he wasn't given the time to laze around like upfront, so maybe he might be a better player there?

No offence taken, you're dead right. I like all our players and am desperate for them to do well, and I guess I am a bit defensive! Granted my blue tinted specs can make me BADLY misjudge players (I liked Beattie and Davies :lol:) but I honestly do think Vic is a good 'un. (y)

And yes would you believe it he played possibly his best match for us today... playing right wing!

I dont think his attitude suits upfront if that makes sense, I mean like the first three games of the season our midfield was supplying nothing going forward and Yakubu seemed to fall into his old ways of looking not bothered and doing nothing, where as putting him in midfield can probably keep someone like victor busy defending and helping with the attack.

I nearly choked when i heard Cahill was starting, certainly didnt expect that lol and when they read out the team sheet over the phone i assumed with Anichebe it would be 4-4-2 then later on saw he was a right winger and looked impressive there.
