Not to side with the potato, but there is an awful lot of blame to go around for this disaster and there was a lot the Ukrainians could have done post-2014 to make this scenario less likely.

For a start, there is going after the Russian language in the way that they did. No country should be able to suppress the language used by a good percentage of its people.
