Russia started the war because its rulers think they rule Ukraine.

It really is that simple.

The Ukrainians have rejected the Russians - with a few pockets of Ukraine more amenable, such as Crimea. The Russians have no right to start a war because other countries choose different allies. They started the war because they are run by war criminals.

And the US and UK weren't criminals when invading Iraqi using a similar preposterous excuse? Putin is obviously a war criminal,but then why not Bush and Blair?

This is one thing I can agree with you on. Both Bush and Blair concocted a story for invasion and tens of thousands died. What America thinks of Bush is up to them, Blair however should have been prosecuted for his actions….Putin however is also a war criminal …….

I doubt there is a country that can act as a mediator at this stage.

This war has been bad for Europe and absolutely disastrous for Russia. The European economy absolutely dwarfs the Russian one - Italy's alone is greater than Russia's. Europe has almost completely weened itself off Russian gas, for example, at the cost of a very minor contraction in its economy. This time last year, few would have predicted that. Russia's leverage is hugely diminished. They will remain a pariah with the most advanced economies in the world for as long as they are run as a mafia state.

Despite all that, only 3% of their GDP goes to the war (The Economist). They could go on for long as long as the middle class remains more or less satisfied.
The gas-situation is not resolved yet either. A harsh winter and chinese demand could still lead to shortages (says TotalEnergies). Last summer the gas was overpriced, some say it's underpriced now.

Also, looking at GDP is dangerous as the added value of a Russian Civil Engineer, being paid peanuts but being reasonably educated (at least the ones I met at Uni were), is less than an Italian one, despite doing the same work.

Not to say they're not a pariahstate, but whether the EU has done enough to (help) win the war, remains to be seen.

So Russia should be allowed to do what it likes because of something that happened years ago. How far do you wanna go back?
