Be interesting to see if Diane abbot is allowed to stand, will be an easy stick for the right wing to beat him with but he will also lose support from the left of the party especially with corbyn already gone
And will be a headache if she stands as an independent. She should quit claiming things are unsustainable as they are and run as an independent. It’s clear she’s not wanted

Lazy glib insults that stick pick up a few percentage points. They also don't stem the sort of tide that washed Churchill out of office in '45.

The impact of Attlee's policies is more or less immaterial to a discussion of his effectiveness as a campaigner.
His policies did have an impact during his campaign, at least his prospective ones and the 'charismatic' colonialist drunk and his lazy glib insults got a walloping.

There times in public discourse when charisma or so called will effect polling and their are times when it has less impact. The start of tories decline in popularity was the realisation that johnson was incapable of honesty and and had no ability for detail. In its current form the british public is not seeking a great orator, its seeking just a basic level of competance. all of which is represented in the polling

I'm sorry, but you lost me. Let me run back over my arguments:

- Attlee was a terrible campaigner who benefited from a sea change in British politics
- You or I could beat the Tory platform in '45, and probably do better than Attlee on seats gained

Boris doesn't have anything to do with what I put on the table.

After the Brexit vote I'm wary about any election now.

People will believe lies and fear rather than common sense at the end of the day.

That's why I think this election will be closer than people expect.
Honestly it’s mad .

Ran into a woman I know yesterday who lives in a red wall constituency. Single mum , rented accommodation, never really had any spare money the 5/6years I’ve known her , her mum struggling for cancer treatment with the NHS issues , trying to set up a little business up cover the cost of living rises with her lifelong best friend a practicing Muslim who came her as a small child . all her knowledge and news from social media and who did she vote for in the locals ? Reform and might do it again you know “coz you can’t let everyone in can you “.

It’s desperate but it’s where we are .

I think I'd still find a way to lose in 45. The crux of it for me is that Starmers personality doesn't matter at all in the current circumstance, much like Attlee's didn't matter in 45, whether silly accusations from the opposition stick or not. Starmers entire opposition tactic has largely been of a laissez faire nature and allowing the gross incompetance and corruption of the tories speak for itself.

He has made a couple of speeches I liked, that showed more sincerity and content than anything the tory front bench is capable.

The PoS johnson for whatever reason could enagage with a section of the public, but his obvious incompetance has led British politics away from personalities for the time being.

In short I pretty much agree with your assessment of Starmer's personality not being an issue this time around, like it wasn't for Attlee. Whatever else he was, churchill was far wittier than any of the current tories and his silly remarks didn't manage to have any impact

I would put it this way: Churchill was far more of an electoral force than anything Sunak and the gang can deploy, and Starmer is less incompetent in an electoral scrap than Attlee.

I can see Labour leaking points. I can see them leaking a hundred seats. I can't see them leaking #10.

It's quite disgusting to think that there's room in the Labour Party for Natalie Elphicke but not Diane Abbott.
I’ve voted Labour in every general election, local election, council election since 1970. I held my nose in the Blair years, but I can’t hold it any longer. The comparison between the treatment of Corbyn and Abbot and that of the recent Tory incomers tells me all I need to about the direction of travel under the current leadership. Keir, I’m done.
