UEFA Looking To Potentially Extend the Champions League

For ****'s sake. Just make the Champions League do what its name suggests and make it "Champions" only. That way, you would have the likes of Manchester United, Barcelona, AC Milan, Bayern Munich, Arsenal, Benfica, Valencia, Schalke all competing in the UEFA Cup or Europa League, whatever it gets called. There would then be a lot more prestige in winning the bloody thing.

Keep the CL but only the winners of each european league qualify.

Create a NEW SUPER CUP with only the teams that finish 2-5. The Winner qualifys for next season CL.

Scrap the Europa league.

This is the kind of system I'd most prefer, BUT, it's lead to the eventual creation of a breakaway European Super League due to decreased revenue. We'd be back where we were at the end of the 90s which lead to the scrapping of the Cup Winners Cup to create the Champions League to placate the European clubs

is the correct answer

Well they aren't going to allow Liverpool to slip into an abyss of mediocrity, so they will have to find some method of getting them back into the Champions League, it seems like this will be it.

this. i see this as a way to help the teams that were once huge money teams that are now in mid-table obscurity(liverpool) or could potentially fall there(arsenal) make sure they are in the thing. just a way to make sure the have's stay the have's.

so UEFA are looking at making the CL more accessible for teams such as ourselves? or have I missed something?

That's correct but the competition will be massively devalued in my opinion.

There would be potentially massive benefits for clubs who qualified, if the £ split is kept fair. It'd also massively increase clubs reputations around the world.

But how could it continue to call its self champions league? Currently even that's tenuous at best.

Silly idea. I agree with the above posters to actually make the Champions League, champions only and having another competition for the other teams. That won't happen though because then one of either Real Madrid or Barcelona will miss out every season.

Surely any extension of the current format would create a European Super League, but somehow still make teams play domestically around it???

What's the point in that? Surely one or the other or you're just making a novelty gesture at delaying the inevitable.

There are billions floating in untapped markets with respect to selling the rights..........look at the deals beeing done overseas for the EPL...trust me the money is there to support a substantial prize money allocation.

Screw the money and bring back the old format when qualifying actually meant somethnig.

Its a joke, and its slowly moving towards a European Super League.

Modern football will die soon; too much money involved and the regular fan will be priced out. Its a horrible circle

Uefa dictate the prize money for each competetion, sponsership deals and TV rights.

It,s a global game with global inflows of cash to support the prize money.

It doesn't make sense mate. The revenue would be lower simply by the virtue if their only being a handful of teams in it. Can you really imagine Real and Barca being happy with a tournament where only one of them could play In it every season ? Too many powerful teams would miss out.

The CL is here to stay as the main european adventure in whatever format they deem fit. The Europe league is pants really and I think there's only room for 1 European comp. they have tried changing the Europe thing before with no great affect.

So I'm all for it tbh. If you can't beat them join them!!

Surley you would have a dozen powerfull teams which will draw the money to them and new tv deal rights to be competed on a global basis for a new competition.

Anyway it,s go to better than what is beeing proposed now by Uefa.
