CARLO MOTD INTERVIEW

JOSE MOTD INTERVIEW

Goats 11 to start :

Pickford
Coleman - Keane - Mina - Digne
Gomes
Allan(subject to JINX) - Delph
Hamez(subject to JINX)
DCL - Rico

TBF that was a good attempt at the starting 11
Particularly considering that neither Allan nor James had yet been confirmed and Doucoure didn't sign until a full week after it was posted. ;)

Doucoure and Allan were superb.

James oozes class. He was knackered by the hour but kept going and that touch and then little lob over a defender late on was sublime.

Great goal from DCL and two great saves from Pickford. Rich worked hard without reward.

A really solid display. Lots to work on but a great start.

If we are to play 4-3-3, we just need to ensure we are getting a bit closer together when attacking. Today we could play mainly on the counter but at times we just looked overstretched. It'll come though, especially with a right-back who can get up and down hopefully coming in (as good as Coleman was defensively today).

Well that was decent! No links to the Samaritans or vouchers for buying bleach! Well done to the whole team today. All played as though the RBJ means something. And Gracias James! I get the feeling he has played footy before!!!!

We looked something like a football side today and for the first time in a long time. It's been so long since we controlled the midfield as we did today. As soon as Davies and Siggi came on it started to go wrong but held out. I still wasn't happy with the amount of pressure we brought on ourselves passing around with Pickford but once teams realise we're not going to give it away then we'll get a bit more room (hopefully). A couple of decent blocks/saves from Pickford and a good punch - please let this be what we get for the rest of the season.

Happy start to the Premiership season and WBA at home next - too early to talk about going top?

Pickford or Allan was a tough choice - but had to give it to Jordan just to balance the extreme dogs abuse we have given him recently. Too easy to give it to the fashionable new guy :)

But Allan was excellent Doucoure and James really good too.Gomes looks like he belonged in that midfield too.

But guys - we beat Spurs, Away, with almost double their shots/chances. Brilliant start!

Made up with that. A fully deserved win, earned through quality and effort. Couple observations...

Pickford - Looked like he was mostly back to his best. Two crucial saves in the first half and constantly decisive at coming to punch away anything he couldn't grab. Distribution lacking a bit, few too many balls went straight out for a throw but he was solid.

Mina and Keane - Didn't they just look impenetrable? Keane played a couple brilliant balls up too. Only slight mark against them was the chances that led to Pickford's saves. Mina was plucking balls out the air all game.

Digne and Coleman - Both struggled with Spurs' width in the first half but offered so much going forward too. At one point in the 2nd half, Coleman was in a CAM position and looked like his old self rampaging self with a decent shot on target too. Digne's free kick was just perfection.

Allan and Doucoure - You wouldn't think they've only been here a week. They really fought for it today. Allan gave the CBs so much protection that I've not seen for years from a DM. Doucoure went periods of not getting involved in the first half but grew into it. Around the 60 minute mark, Spurs broke on the counter from our corner and his sprint and last ditch tackle was perfect and probably stopped a certain goal. Douc was strong, smart, alert and fast, and my MOTM. I know its early but these two look like two of our best ever signings. Totally night and day compared to Delph and Schneiderlin!

Rodriguez - Absolute class. He is a luxury player but still put in a decent effort out of possession, but that's not his game and with the ball he is just magic. Sky said he created 5 chances today, the most from a player on their debut since Alexei Sanchez. I was a little concerned how he'd fare with the fouling of Spurs but he saw it coming and it was effortless for him. Around 70 mins he flicked the ball around their left back, then did the same on another spurs player and cooly passed it on. He's so good. Should have had at least one assist if Richy had his shooting boots on. Just oozes class.

Richy and DCL - Richy should have had at least 1, and could have had 3 or 4. Looked really off it in first half but 2nd half he was so strong and kept hold of the ball so well. A shame he wasn't up to his usual standards for efforts on goal but he was so important to the team performance today. DCL was similar, strong and combative and like Richy didn't threaten the goal much from open play but took his goal perfectly by outmuscling Dier and Alderweireld and nailing the header. Loris had no chance.

Ancelotti - The subs were left late but when you look at our bench, you can't really blame him for waiting as long as he did to bring on Gylfi and Davies. His faith in the new boys fully rewarded.
